Criminal Minds’ Matthew Gray Gubler is Financing Director Richard Bates Jr.’s Upcoming Comedy

Richard Bates, Jr. has a comedy that can not be financed. Simply put, the director says that:

“My new movie I cannot get financed for the life of me. I’ll just say it’s a pagan comedy, a comedy about a coven. No one in their right mind I guess would finance this because it is a pagan comedy, right?”

This has to be frustrating for a director. But, it seems that Bates has someone who is willing to come in and help out. That would be Criminal Minds’ Matthew Gray Gubler. Having played Spencer Reid on the crime drama show for 15 years, he’s also been in three of Bates’ movies. These movies are Suburban Gothic, Excision, and Trash Fire. While there isn’t a title yet for his upcoming pagan comedy, Bates did talk about how he and Gubler came together for this new movie.

“Matthew Gray Gubler really liked it and he and I are, just with our own money, just going to shoot the movie less than a month from now. We just said we’re going to shoot it at our places and at our friends’ places and not let anyone stop us.”

Bates added:

“One exciting thing about the budgets I work with, I guess my obsession in making them [is that] I do think every day I could die and I want to leave as much behind that I think matters in one way or another as possible. I’ll go out there and make it. Nothing’s going to stop me. I don’t need as much money as someone else. If I can’t get the perfect amount of money, I’ll find a way to make it for less. I’m not going to not create this thing.”

We can assume that the upcoming movie will be along the lines of the previous three that Gubler has been in, which means he’s comfortable working with Bates. Are you excited for an upcoming pagan comedy with Gubler?
