Joaquin Phoenix Talks Potential ‘Joker’ Sequel

With Todd Phillips Joker burning up the box office and getting serious Oscar buzz, it is only natural that talk of a sequel is mentioned. The main drawback to that might be the films star Joaquin Phoenix. He is not known as an actor who likes to repeat himself after a role. He puts his all in the character and then moves on. So would he be persuaded to don the clown’s makeup again?

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times‘ The Envelope, Phoenix was straight about the possibilities of doing a sequel and what wouldn’t be a motivation  for it.

I wouldn’t do a sequel just because the first movie is successful.  That’s ridiculous.

However, a sequel was not far from his mind while making the film. Mainly because there was so much of the character to explore.

Long before the release or before we had any idea if it would be successful, we talked about sequels. In the second or third week of shooing, I was like, ‘Todd, can you just start working on a sequel? There’s way too much to explore.’ It was kind of in jest — but not really.

That might be what would persuade the famed method actor to revisit the role. He might concede if Phillips can show him a storyline that would challenge him in new ways. It appears the future will tell but not the box office success.

Would you like to see Joaquin Phoenix do a Joker sequel? What storyline do you think might peak his interest enough to agree to it? Share your writers ideas with us at Geek Vibes Nation.
