So when he agreed to play the titular character in Todd Phillip’s Joker, he immediately began studying for the role. His first area of interest was looking for inspiration for the character’s signature, sinister cackle. He explained this in a translated interview from Il Venerdi, the weekly magazine of the popular Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

I started [with the laugh]. I watched videos of people suffering from pathological laughter, a neurological disorder that makes individuals laugh uncontrollably.

From the film’s first trailer, we were able to hear some of the fruits of the actor’s labor. In doing the Joker’s laugh, he is following in the footsteps of a diverse set of performers. Talents such as Caesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and the voice most commonly identified with the Joker, Mark Hamill.

While the film is still a few weeks away from its premier at the Venice Film Festival, Phoenix’s performance in the Joker is already receiving “Oscar” worthy recognition. Are you excited to see Todd Phillips Joker and what Joaquin Phoenix will bring new to the character? It has already been said that this will not be based on any comic Book preconceived notion of the character. Will that be a problem for you? Share your thoughts with us at GeekVibesNation.
