Storyline
Upon Anna Delvey’s (Julia Garner) arrest and transfer to prison on multi-million dollar financial fraud allegations, Anna Chlumsky, a reporter for the Manhattan, is intrigued by her narrative. However, Todd Spodek (Arian Moayed) represents Anna and attempts to clear her name.
As soon as Vivian arrives at Riker’s Island to meet with Anna, she finds herself enthralled by her story and eager to learn more. So, despite her supervisors’ disapproval, she decides to go forward with the piece and starts searching for further leads and sources to back it up.
She meets Val (James Cusati-Moyer), a well-known New York fashion designer. He tells Vivian about the first time he met Anna and how impressed he was by her ability to conduct herself impeccably. Then, while discussing her connection with Chase Sikorski (Saamer Usmani), an up-and-coming software developer, he discusses her relationship with her then-boyfriend.
As things became tense, Anna decided to break up with Chase and move off on her own since she felt that he was suffocating her. So when she first came up with the concept for the social club, she was seeking the necessary connections and funds to get it up and running quickly.
Using Val’s contacts, she secures an all-star panel of advisers for the ‘Anna Delvey Foundation’ or ‘ADF,’ which would be the club’s name she would establish. However, when Nora learns that Anna has been using her card for personal purchases, she quickly flees the scene and goes on to the next victim in line.
Neff’s employer at the hotel where Anna worked began requesting money, and Anna started doing the same. After Anna had paid her bill and left the hotel, Neff followed her out the door. Rachel’s coworker Noah also accompanied them on the trip to Morocco.
As a temporary workaround, while Anna works out her payment troubles with her bank, Rachel surrenders her card to the resort in Morocco. However, when things get out of hand, Rachel and Noah flee, with Anna following and running all the charges on Rachel’s credit card.
She makes a phone call to Kacy and asks her to arrange for a return trip for her. Her attempt to stay with Kacy when she returns is rebuffed. Anna keeps avoiding Rachel and making reasons why she doesn’t give her the money she requests. She moves from hotel to hotel, constantly being evicted when she can’t afford to stay there.
She completes the story, which becomes a worldwide sensation thanks to her extensive research. When Vivian isn’t satisfied with Anna’s explanation, she sets out to locate her parents in Germany to find out what happened. However, she returns home and ditches the narrative when she discovers they’ve given up on her for a long time.
Our verdict
Unfortunately, Inventing Anna does not live up to the hype around it. Nevertheless, it’s a source of enjoyment. Its weakness lies in how Delvey’s tale is presented: it is presented as a vengeance fantasy that is vaguely feminist and girl boss-adjacent.
According to the story, Delvey does the things she does because she is a product of society’s faults — racism, classism, capitalism, and all the other “-isms” — combined with the understanding that the game of riches is rigged and stacked against all of us.
It is finally willing to accept concepts of heroism and extreme self-empowerment, no matter how hesitant it may be in the beginning. By the film’s conclusion, when a group of reporters practically applauds Delvey’s victories in court, one thing is clear: the film wants us to all be pulling for her. But unfortunately, it is much too quick to equate these characteristics with heroism and nobility, rather than allowing its protagonist to be just interested in the money in the first place.
