One of the problems you run into when you move on from your childhood and into the “adult” world is you lose track of what is going on in the world you used to follow explicitly, the comic book world. Case in point, it was recently announced by Marvel Comics that the Superior Spider-Man is reporting back into duty this December. The only problem for me is, I had no idea who or what the Superior Spider-Man was. After some research, I found out the Superior Spider-Man was no other than Otto Octavious, formerly known to me as Doc Ock. A lot has gone on in my substantial absence. Fortunately, our friends at Comicbook.Com took pity on poor uneducated folk like me and explained how this all transpired.
Marvel revealed that Doctor Otto Octavius will once again assume the mantle of the Superior Spider-Man with the creative team of writer Christos Gage and artist Mike Hawthorne.
This story begins with Octavius leaving behind the Doctor Octopus name in order to once again prove that he is the greatest superhero in the Marvel Universe. As rated on the Dr. Octavious scoreboard of course. The term “greatest” is also subjective based on his aforementioned scale. No doubt as Indigo Montoya might say,”I don’t think that means what you think it does.”
Doctor Octopus was considered to be one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes. It was in the “Dying Wish” storyline that he first became the Superior Spider-Man after Peter Parker’s death. Since Doctor Octavius’ own body was giving out, he implanted his mind into Parker’s body.
Octavius’ goal was to prove he was the better Spider-Man than Peter Parker in every way. That he was Superior. It turned out however, that Peter Parker was still buried somewhere in the recesses of Octavius’ mind. When Octavius was battling the Green Goblin and realized he couldn’t defeat him, he decided to surrender control to Parker and allow him to take over during the fight in order to save his beloved, Anna Marconi. Afterward, Octavius managed to install his mind into the robot body of the Living Brain, where he waited for another opportunity.
It was during The Clone Conspiracy event, Octavius was restored to a clone version of his own body. Clones, clones everywhere it seems. He then uploaded his consciousness into a perfected clone of Peter Parker’s body and became the Superior Octopus. You have give him high marks for consistency. Superior Spider-Man, Superior Octopus, if you’re going to do something, make it SUPERIOR! Now with this new series, it seems Octavius will leave the Octopus behind to become the Superior Spider-Man once more.
