The Oscars are now over and what a night it was! There were some really great acceptance speeches and history was made. Let’s go through some of the big categories of this year’s Oscar winners:
Joaquin Phoenix Takes Home Best Leading Actor
This was well-deserved. Extremely well-deserved. It’s been an odd journey, being a fan of Todd Phillips’ Joker. While it’s gotten amazing praise, it has also received criticism for themes that simply weren’t there. Joaquin Phoenix put in the performance of a lifetime and used his acceptance speech to raise awareness. Not only that, but he called out “cancel-culture” and gave a tear-jerking shoutout to his late brother, River Phoenix. I’m overjoyed that Phoenix won and now, we have two Oscar-winning Jokers.
Brad Pitt Wins Supporting Actor
Admittedly, I would have loved to see this go to Anthony Hopkins’ for The Two Popes. But, the Academy felt Pitt deserved the award and even though I feel it should have gone to someone else, Pitt was the standout in Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. Can we take a moment to reflect on how Luke Perry was not included in the “In Memoriam” segment when the film he was in was literally nominated for an Oscar?
Renee Zellweger is JUDY!
Congratulations to the amazingly talented Zellweger for her win for Judy. There was some amazing talent in the Leading Actress category and to choose just one almost seemed unfair. Congratulations to both Zellweger and all of the nominees.
Laura Dern Receives Love for Marriage Story
Just like Brad Pitt’s win, I think Dern’s performance in Marriage Story didn’t rise up above the other women in her category. Still, Dern is a phenomenal actress and seeing her so happy to be up on stage, accepting the award, was truly heartwarming.
Whoo!! Jojo Rabbit!
Taika Waititi won for Best Adapted screenplay and there is no one more deserving. If you have seen Jojo Rabbit, then you know what a spectacular job Waititi did. This film was able to balance comedy with a serious message. Each actor did an amazing job and it really holds a special place in my heart. Seeing Waititi up on stage, as the first indigenous person to win this award; was so amazing.
The Night Belonged to Parasite
In a history-making move, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite won the Oscar for best picture. This is the first time a non-English-speaking film has won this award. Bong Joon Ho also took home the award for Best Director. Both awards were incredibly well-deserved. Parasite was praised from day one of its release and to see that kind of talent and storytelling recognized was truly phenomenal. Bong Joon Ho had an amazing acceptance speech where he praised Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. He also gave praise to his crew and was ready to party! Now, make sure you go back and watch all of Joon Ho’s work because he has always been a great director.
Of course, I am also happy that my personal favorite Ford v Ferrari brought home a couple of wins and that 1917 was recognized by the Academy. I think everyone this year was winners, as 2019 really raised the bar for filmmaking. I hope 2020 continues this trend, as we need these stories to continue being told.
