If you want to get better at gaming then you have come to the right place. Below you’ll find some expert tips on practical ways that you can boost your online gaming experience. Read on to find out what they are.

Choose the right settings for fun.

If you’re not playing beast mode then you’re not doing right, right? Well actually no! This is not the view that we subscribe to. Because (the clue is in the name guys) games are meant to be fun, and not everyone finds dying at the first big boss over and over again enjoyable. That is why we fervently recommend that you should choose the setting that will provide you with the most enjoyable experience.

If you are a casual, or novice gamer, or you want a less challenging experience that setting might be easy. If you are a hardcore gamer, on your 7th playthrough, then hard mode might be the only thing that scratches your itch. Just be sure you are choosing the mode that you want, and not what others think you ‘should’ play as it can truly enhance your experience.

    Invest in the right hardware.

You can also improve your online gaming experience by investing in the right hardware. Unfortunately, there are so many different options to choose from. First of all, you’ll need to decide whether you want to play online via your PC or a console.

Of course, there are benefits and disadvantages to each. For instance, consoles are widely prized for their ease of use, as they are plug-and-play, making them accessible to all. Consoles also tend to be priced more reasonably whereas gaming PCs can get expensive pretty fast.

On the other hand gaming PCs tend to have a high level of performance which is crucial for serious or competitive gamers. Additionally, PCs allow a great deal of customization which means users can upgrade as they see fit and enhance their experience time and time again before investing in a new machine.

    Choose the right games.

OK, so there is no right game, only the right games for you. While there is nothing wrong with playing a wide range of games, most of us tend to gravitate towards one or two specific genres because we enjoy them most and build skills in them to improve our performance. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the main genres of gaming with a brief explanation.

RPG games – RPGs or role-playing games are immersive games where you play a specific character role. They usually come with statistics setups that define your character’s ability similar to tabletop RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons. They also come as MMORPGs which are Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games.

Action-adventure games – Action-adventure games are similar to RPGs in that you play from a specific character’s point of view. However, they tend to only have basic character mechanics and are not stat-based.

Sports games – Sports games can include a wide variety of sports from boxing, to basketball, to football to fishing. In sports games, you play the sport either as an individual or as a team.

Fighting games– Fighting games are another popular genre, where two or more characters go head to head.

Puzzle & card games – Puzzle and card games like spades can be found with ease online. They usually require either the use of strategy or problem-solving (or both) and a big benefit of these types of games is that they can be played for free.

Shooter Games – Shooters come in 2 main types: first person (also known as “first pers’) and third person (also known as “third pers”). First-person shooters are where you play from a first-person perspective, that is you play as the character. A third-person shooter is where you can see your character on the screen with all the others.

Racing games – Racing games involve driving different types of vehicles around a variety of tracks.

Survival/survival horror games – Survival games are where you start with little and the aim is to survive for as long as possible. Survival horror games are where you have to survive when something dark and nefarious is coming after you.

Find the right characters to play.

Once you have tracked down the game you want to play, invest some effort into choosing the right type of character. Remember that in games where you can pick your character, or change their stats you can have a very different experience depending on the choices you make.

Many collaborative and online games provide characters that fit within either the tank, damage or support role. Make sure to play in all these roles until you get a feel for the one that suits you the best. Once you know which one you prefer you can specialise in that type of role. Although it’s best to not play only one character but have at least two that you continue to level up, this will still allow you to reap the benefits of their different skills and characteristics when playing.

Invest in a quality gaming headset.

Gaming can be a very social activity as long as you have an effective way to communicate with those that you are playing with or against. With this in mind, many gamers use headsets which are headphones with a built-in mic. These allow them to hear what is going on in the game, as well as the communications that their teammates are sending. They also allow them to speak to others playing the game, while ensuring that they are heard clearly, which when you are in the middle of a raid is pretty important!

    Join online gaming communities.

You can also improve your online gaming experience by joining one or more of the many online communities that revolve around specific games, franchises and platforms. For example, many RPG games include the ability to be a member of a guild. A guild is a group of people in a game that play and raid together. Guilds often provide bonuses for those who join, as well as in-game places in which to hang out. They usually have online meeting places too such as their discord server where players can meet, swap memes, ask questions and organise events in the game.

    Create a dedicated gaming space.

You can also enhance your gameplay by creating a special space which is only for gaming. This is probably the easiest to do if you are a PC gamer, as a battle station necessitates its own space in the home. Indeed you can find many impressive setups online complete with powerful PCs, high-grade screens, gaming chairs and neon lights.

Console gamers can create these types of spaces too, but as they usually run through TV rather than monitors such spaces tend to be centred around the living rooms and couch area. There are some pretty sweet custom mounts and shelving for users that like to switch easily between consoles out there though, so you can always take some inspiration from those.

    Set some limits.

While we firmly believe that gaming is the best hobby in the world, it never does you any harm to step outside from time to time and touch grass. Taking short breaks from gaming, to ensure that your IRL life is balanced with your online one is one of the most useful and healthy things you can do for yourself.

With that in mind, setting yourself a limit for how long you will play each night, or over a week can be a very helpful move in tracking and managing your gameplay. Oh and getting to the gym once in a while won’t hurt either!
