Two people stand in a wooded area, looking at a red arched door standing upright and freestanding among the trees.

Some doors bring you to your past. Some doors lead you to your future. And some doors change everything. Sarah (Margot Robbie) and David (Colin Farrell) are single strangers who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding and soon, through a surprise twist of fate, find themselves on A BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY – a funny, fantastical, sweeping adventure together where they get to relive important moments from their respective pasts, illuminating how they got to where they are in the present…and possibly getting a chance to alter their futures.

For in-depth thoughts on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, please see my colleague Brandon Lewis’s review from its original theatrical release here.

    Video Quality

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings A Big Bold Beautiful Journey to Blu-Ray with a stunning 1080p video presentation that is every bit as lush and lovely as a modern movie should look on the format. The image is crisp and clear with a brilliant color palette that saturates the frame. The film injects some vibrant splashes of colors within the clothing, production design, and locales which never disappoint. Black levels are stable with no unsightly instances of digital noise or crush, and highlights are firm with no blooming at play.

The skin tones remain natural with an impressive amount of detail present in close-ups, especially when it comes to the stubble of some facial hair and the texture of makeup. The varied production design along with the fabrics of clothing provide out-of-this-world textural details. The presentation delivers a pleasing amount of depth on display both in the interior shots and when out in the open air. This Blu-Ray adopts the premium level of quality you expect from Sony.

    Audio Quality

This Blu-Ray comes with a dynamic DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that materializes every subtle element to perfection. The dialogue stands out without being overshadowed by any parallel sounds. Some whimsical moments sneak up on you and dynamically engage the surround speakers. There are countless examples of wondrous ambient details expanding the setting. The score from Joe Hisaishi carries a lot of emotional weight as it flows from the speakers in a full, well-balanced way. The low end of the track comes alive when the story asks it to. The audio track is a top-tier presentation for this feature in all respects. There is an array of optional subtitles provided including English, English SDH, French, Spanish, and more.

    Final Thoughts

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is a film that is incredibly earnest, which we embrace fully, but it is let down by a script that does not serve the central romance with the proper care. Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell are a dream duo, yet the script holds them back from ever feeling like a believable romantic pairing. The work of Kogonada is quite lovely and brings some needed magic to the screen. Despite this, it is a film that does not live up to its potential. Sony Pictures has provided a Blu-Ray disc that sports a dazzling A/V presentation and a few nice supplements. If you love the talent involved, it is still worth a watch.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is currently available to purchase on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital.
