A Japanese Startup Company Is Developing a Face Mask That Can Improve Speech & Translate Up to 8 Languages

There have been a lot of masks made during the COVID-19 pandemic, but this one has to be the most interesting one of all. Coming from a Japanese startup company called Donut Robotics is a high-tech mask. A smart mask that is made to improve communication. It’s a technological mask that is made out of white plastic and silicone. It has an embedded microphone that connects with the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth. It’s made to improve speech while speaking while wearing a mask, since that has been a challenge for those who attempt to communicate with one another while remaining safe.

Now, it should be noted that due to the cutouts in the mask, it is not meant to provide protection from the virus. Instead, it’s meant to be worn over a regular medical mask. It also can translate between Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, English, Spanish, and French.

This software was first utilized by Donut Robotics for a robot called Cinnamon. The engineers then decided to put their software into a face mask after the pandemic hit.

CEO of Donut Robotics, Taisuke Ono; started this company in 2014. Since then, it has looked to find ways to reinvent itself and find ways to integrate their technology in a relevant way. As Ono says:

“We still have many situations where we have to meet in person. In this new normal … the mask and the app are very helpful.”

The face mask can connect to smartphones up to 32 feet away. And will cost around $40.00 USD. What do you think about this mask and is it something you would purchase?
