‘Agents of Shield’s’ Ming-Na Wen Honors the Women of Aviation

The W.A.S.Ps

It must be clear now that I am a HUGE fan of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. That includes being a fan of the ageless wonder that is Ming-Na Wen. During the last episode, her Agent May and Yo-Yo infiltrated Area 51 dressed as female pilots. To honor her portrayal, May was presented with a painting of her in her pilots garb on Instagram.

In her response she acknowledged the Women AirForce Service Pilots of WWII and the Asian women who served like Maggie Gee and Hazel Ying Lee. She also praised the costume work of the S.H.I.E.L.D. costume designer Whitney Galitz.

Impressive, But Sexist

In the episode, knowing the Sexism rampant in the era, Yo-Yo wondered why female pilots were accepted. May told her that the female pilots outflew the men. They had to since they were usually pulling the targets for target practice. Yo-Yo, for her part acknowledged this by saying, “Impressive…but still Sexist.”
