We are at the second to last episode of American Gods season three. And with the way this episode ended, I cannot even imagine what is going to happen in the season finale. In many ways, episode nine is the culmination of everything that has happened in season three. It’s opened many doors, but closed one in particular. For those who have not read the book, the reveal in Lakeside will be quite a surprise. For those who knew what would happen, you will feel satisfied, though you will wish it lasted a little longer.
A Satisfying Climax
In the previous two seasons, you never felt that the story was leading to something by the time you came to the second to last episode. Here, it’s clear that this is the climax of everything season three has been working toward. You felt a payoff, which you may not have necessarily felt in previous seasons. Not that I’m speaking down on the previous seasons – you guys know how much I love seasons one and two.

There is a clear air of defeat in the war. We feel like we’re moving towards the final stretch of the race, but does Mr. Wednesday have the strength to continue on? And what does his somber attitude signal to the New Gods? Crispin Glover returns as Mr. World and we see a much different New Gods leader than the one who offered an olive branch to Odin in season one. If Wednesday thought he could simply call the war off, he has another thing coming.
Good Development For Laura and Liam
Laura’s journey is always amazing in this episode. Not only because of the end of the episode, but because of her scenes with Liam. The show could have easily gone in one direction when it came to Laura and Liam, which would have cheapened the development of her character. Instead, they did a great job in establishing Liam as a character you want to continue seeing, while not thinking he’s simply a replacement for Mad Sweeney. Laura Moon became my hero this episode and anyone who doesn’t think her journey in this show is valid…I guess we’re watching two different shows.

Rating: 4/5
It’s great seeing Technical Boy beginning to embrace the things that have held him back all season and I cannot wait to see the payoff with this Artifact One storyline. All I can say is that I can’t believe the next episode is the last. This season has been a journey – one I hope to see another season for.
