American Gods’ Yetide Badaki Teases Bilquis’ Connection to the Orishas

Just like Mad Sweeney* went through a lot of evolution before becoming the leprechaun we knew him as, Bilquis has also had a lot of past lives. As she said in season two, she was around for a very long time before even Odin popped up. Viewers of American Gods know Bilquis as the Queen of Sheba. A motherf*cking queen. And someone who knows how to evolve to stay with the times.

We may only know a little par of Bilquis’ past. We’ve seen flashbacks in past seasons, but it seems we may know more of Bilquis come season three. In a new episode, Yetide Badaki introduced us to the American Gods version of MTV Cribs. We got a look at Bilquis’s pad in the video – which in addition to looking like a cool place to live, also lends hints to season three. Take a look below!

In addition to showing us aspects of Bilquis, such as her loving literature; she also points to the connections to the Orishas. From what I understand, Orishas are mediators between the human and spiritual realm. Considering Bilquis is a god, perhaps the Orishas were a means to mediate Bilquis and her human worshippers? Originally, the Queen of Sheba was mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, but has undergone many iterations throughout history – expanding across Jewish, Islamic, and Ethiopian elaborations. How do the Orishas, originally from modern-day Southwest Nigeria; connect with Bilquis? I’m excited to find out!

Wale and Herizen Guardiola will play Orishas this season.

*[Mad Sweeney originally was referenced to have been the king Buile Shuibhne in season one. In season two it was revealed Mad Sweeney was the sun god Lugh before then. Meaning, throughout thousands of years, Mad Sweeney’s identity has evolved. Similar to what it seems the show will do with Bilquis.]
