Ang Lee Moving Forward with Gemini Man Despite Billy Lynn Failing

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”17625″ img_size=”798×420″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]While Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk was not successful, that doesn’t mean that Paramount Pictures is shying away from giving director Ang Lee another chance to use the format of 120 frames per second. Lee’s upcoming Gemini Man will be shot in 3D at 120 frames per second and 4k resolution; it’s certainly a risky experiment since Billy Lynn was the first movie shot at that fps, with Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey being at 40fps. The standard is usually 24fps.

The Playlist has reported that the studio has sent out a letter to theater chain exhibitors to ask them to test their equipment in order to see if they are able to even screen Gemini Man in its intended format. The letter reads:

“We want to do everything possible to make projecting the high frame rate version of ‘Gemini Man’ a turnkey experience for you and provide audiences with the latest technological advancement in cinema.”

The upcoming movie will star Will Smith, who is an aging assassin who is trying to avoid being killed by a younger clone of himself. Among the cast are Clive Owen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Benedict Wong. Smith will portray both his modern-day self and his younger clone version, with motion capture technology used to make Smith younger for his clone version. The film’s VFX supervisor Bill Westenhofer commented:

“The clone is present for 400-plus scenes in over half the movie, delivering full ‘in your face’ emotional performance. Our full methodology involves a combination of scenes where Will plays his younger self wearing appropriate costumes for his body and a motion capture head rig.”

Gemini Man will be released October 4th – what do you think about the film and the fact it’s being shot at 120 frames per second?
