Apple has finally folded the iPhone.
After years of rumors, patents and speculation surrounding whether Apple would ever follow Samsung, Google and other manufacturers into the foldable smartphone market, the company has officially unveiled the iPhone Duo.
The new device represents one of the biggest physical changes to Apple’s smartphone since the original iPhone arrived nearly two decades ago.
Rather than using the familiar single-screen slab design, the iPhone Duo opens like a book, transforming from a compact smartphone into a much larger device intended to blur the line between an iPhone and an iPad.
And Apple is arriving considerably later than most of its competitors.

Apple’s entrance into the category comes more than seven years after Samsung released the original Galaxy Fold.
Since then, Samsung, Google, Huawei, Honor, Oppo, Xiaomi and other manufacturers have experimented with everything from traditional book-style foldables to compact flip phones and even devices containing multiple folds.
Apple waited.
That isn’t particularly unusual for the company. Apple frequently allows a category to develop before entering with its own interpretation rather than attempting to be first.
The iPhone Duo now becomes the company’s answer to devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series and Google’s Pixel Fold lineup.
It Opens Like A Book
The iPhone Duo uses the larger book-style approach rather than the smaller clamshell design popularized by devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip.
When closed, the phone has a shorter and wider shape that has frequently been compared to a passport.
Open it and the experience changes considerably.
Apple says the interior display provides roughly 80% more screen space than the company’s next-largest iPhone.
That additional room isn’t simply intended to make videos bigger.
Apple is positioning the interior screen as a productivity space capable of supporting more sophisticated multitasking than a conventional iPhone.
The iPhone Duo Can Run Apps Side By Side
One of the biggest advantages of a foldable display is being able to treat the phone like a miniature tablet.
The iPhone Duo is designed to take advantage of that extra space by allowing apps to operate alongside one another.
That could mean keeping Messages open beside Safari, viewing email while looking at a calendar or using one application as a reference while working inside another.
It’s functionality Android foldables have offered for years, but bringing it into the iPhone ecosystem could dramatically expand the audience for foldable devices.
Apple now has to prove its software can take advantage of all that additional screen space rather than simply stretching ordinary iPhone apps across a larger display.
Apple Pencil Support Is A Big Surprise
The iPhone Duo also supports Apple Pencil.
That’s notable because Apple has historically kept Pencil support exclusive to the iPad family.
A foldable iPhone suddenly gives the stylus enough screen real estate to make considerably more sense.
Opening the Duo could turn the phone into a small digital notebook for writing, sketching, editing images or signing documents without carrying an iPad separately.
For creative professionals and users who already rely heavily on Apple Pencil, that could become one of the device’s strongest selling points.
The iPhone Duo Uses The A20 Pro Chip
Apple isn’t treating its first foldable like an experimental side product with second-tier hardware.
The iPhone Duo is powered by the A20 Pro, the same new generation of silicon being used in Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro family.
That should give the foldable enough performance for demanding applications, games and the heavier multitasking Apple is promoting on the larger interior display.
The chip also places the Duo firmly at the premium end of Apple’s lineup.
Then again, the price already makes that fairly obvious.
The iPhone Duo Could Start At $2,000
Apple’s first foldable was never expected to be cheap.
Reporting immediately ahead of Apple’s announcement placed the entry-level 256GB version of the iPhone Duo at approximately $2,000.
Higher storage configurations could become considerably more expensive, with the largest version reportedly approaching $3,000.
That would easily make the Duo one of the most expensive iPhones Apple has ever sold.
For comparison, premium foldables from Samsung and Google are already positioned near the $2,000 range, meaning Apple isn’t creating the extraordinarily high pricing of this category so much as embracing it.
Still, $2,000 is an enormous asking price for a smartphone.
Apple will need to convince buyers that they’re effectively purchasing both an iPhone and a smaller tablet rather than merely paying twice as much because the screen bends.
Expect Multiple Storage Options
The entry model is expected to begin with 256GB of storage.
Pre-launch reporting indicated Apple could offer configurations stretching all the way to 2TB.
That amount of storage would make considerably more sense if Apple expects customers to use the Duo for professional workflows, high-resolution photography, video editing and other tasks traditionally associated with iPads and Macs.
It would also help explain how the most expensive configuration could approach the $3,000 mark.
Only Two Colors Are Expected At Launch
Don’t expect the wide selection of finishes available across some other iPhones.
The iPhone Duo is reportedly launching in two colors:
- White
- Dark Blue
The limited selection reinforces the idea that Apple is treating the first generation as a focused premium product rather than another mass-market iPhone available in half a dozen playful finishes.
Future generations could obviously expand the color lineup if the format proves successful.
The Cameras Aren’t Quite The Same As The Pro Max
Building a foldable involves compromises.
One of them appears to involve the camera system.
Pre-launch reporting indicated the iPhone Duo uses a pair of 48-megapixel rear cameras rather than duplicating every camera available on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
That means buyers paying more for the foldable shouldn’t automatically assume they’re receiving Apple’s most advanced possible camera package.
Reducing the number of camera modules can free valuable internal space for the hinge, battery and foldable display hardware.
That’s a trade-off foldable manufacturers have faced for years.
The iPhone Duo Arrives During A Major Apple Transition
The device is also arriving at an unusually important moment for Apple.
The September event marks one of the company’s biggest product launches in years and the beginning of a new leadership era.
The foldable iPhone isn’t merely another yearly camera upgrade or processor refresh.
It represents Apple’s first serious attempt to change what an iPhone physically is.
That makes the Duo especially important as Apple approaches the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone.
Foldable Phones Are Still A Small Part Of The Market
For all the attention surrounding folding phones, they remain a relatively small piece of the overall smartphone business.
Foldables accounted for only a fraction of global smartphone sales in 2025 despite years of products from Samsung and other manufacturers.
Price remains one obvious reason.
Durability concerns, visible screen creases, device thickness and uncertainty over whether people actually need a folding phone have also slowed widespread adoption.
Apple entering the category could change that.
The company has an enormous installed user base and a history of turning technologies that already existed into much larger consumer categories.
That doesn’t guarantee millions of people will suddenly spend $2,000 on folding phones.
But Apple entering the market gives foldables their biggest mainstream test yet.
Apple Is Competing Directly With Samsung
Samsung has spent years refining its foldable devices while Apple remained on the sidelines.
That gives Samsung an enormous experience advantage.
Apple doesn’t get the benefit of being compared with Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold.
It has to compete with years of improvements to hinges, screens, durability, cameras and software.
That puts enormous pressure on the iPhone Duo’s first generation.
Customers paying around $2,000 aren’t going to care that it’s Apple’s first attempt.
They’re going to compare it with the best foldable phones available right now.
Why Did Apple Wait So Long?
Apple hasn’t needed a folding iPhone to dominate the premium smartphone market.
That gave the company the luxury of watching everyone else solve the category’s early problems.
The first generation of folding phones came with obvious compromises, including fragile displays, bulky hinges and questions surrounding long-term reliability.
Seven years later, the technology is considerably more mature.
The challenge has shifted from proving a screen can physically fold to proving that folding it actually makes a smartphone better.
That seems to be the question Apple believes it can finally answer.
When Can You Buy The iPhone Duo?
The iPhone Duo won’t necessarily reach stores alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Pre-launch reporting indicated that Apple’s foldable could begin shipping as early as October, giving the traditional Pro models a short head start.
Apple’s rollout details were still developing alongside Wednesday’s announcement, so exact preorder and delivery dates should be watched closely as the company finalizes availability.
The staggered release also wouldn’t be unprecedented for Apple when introducing more complicated new hardware.
The Regular iPhone 18 Is Taking A Different Route
Apple’s 2026 lineup also represents a larger change to the company’s traditional release schedule.
The September spotlight is focused on premium models such as the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo rather than the entire iPhone family arriving together.
The standard iPhone 18 has instead been reported for a later release window.
If that strategy continues, Apple may increasingly use fall for its most expensive flagship hardware while allowing more affordable iPhones to arrive separately.
Is A $2,000 Foldable iPhone Worth It?
That’s going to be the question hanging over the Duo until people actually spend significant time using one.
There is a legitimate argument for the format.
Someone who currently carries both an iPhone and iPad Mini might appreciate consolidating those experiences into a single device. Apple Pencil support could make the Duo especially useful for professionals, while the expanded multitasking should provide capabilities a conventional iPhone simply can’t offer.
There is an equally obvious argument against it.
Two thousand dollars buys an excellent iPhone and leaves enough money for another Apple device.
At $3,000, buyers are entering MacBook Pro territory.
The fold itself therefore can’t be the selling point.
The Duo needs to demonstrate that opening an iPhone fundamentally changes what people can accomplish with it.
The Biggest iPhone Change In Years Has Finally Arrived
Apple spent years watching the foldable market develop from a distance.
That waiting period is officially over.
The iPhone Duo gives Apple a device unlike anything else currently carrying the iPhone name, combining a traditional smartphone with a tablet-sized interior display, Apple Pencil support and expanded multitasking.
It also introduces one of the highest price tags the iPhone lineup has ever seen.
Whether that combination turns foldables into a true mainstream category or leaves the Duo as an expensive niche product remains to be seen.
But one thing is certain.
After nearly 20 years of the iPhone largely being a rectangular piece of glass in your pocket, Apple is finally asking people to unfold it.
