That film never saw the light of day but Armie Hammer who was cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman opened up to /Film to talk how he would have approached Batman. Armie wanted to let play Batman in a very psychotic way saying
“I wanted this Batman character to be so dark, I was like look, no one – and this was George’s idea as well, this was really in the script – but no one ever really shows how truly psychotic this man has to be. Like this is a guy who chooses to put on a costume, in all black, and sneak around at night and beat the shit out of people.”
Batman might be one of the most controversial comic book characters on screen due to his sometimes one rule of No Killing despite that fact that just about every on screen Batman has killed someone at some point with the exception being George Clooney’s Batman. There is also the crowd who says Batman doesn’t use guns despite him doing so in the comics at one point. Would fans have accepted a “psychotic” take on Batman?
Hammer even goes further and describes how he wanted to play Bruce Wayne saying
“So even in times when he would be sitting around, like let’s say he had his batsuit off and all that, he would be sitting down with the thing, looking at the thing with the cowl on, because that’s where he felt the most comfortable in his own weird, twisted way, He was a neurotic, like borderline schizophrenic dude who didn’t trust a single person, including anyone in the Justice League, and had all the dirt on every single one of them, and was ready to take all of them down at the snap of a finger.”
I am not sure how fans would have reacted to Justice League Mortal but it does seem as though Miller’s version of the Justice League would have been a darker more gritty version. The current DCEU has not done well with its darker tone when it comes to critical success and thus it seems DC is trying to lighten things up with more humor and brighter colors. I would have loved to seen Hammer’s take on Batman and he is still someone I hope DC can enlist for a future DC film.
