Marvel Studios has apparently found another member of its new generation of X-Men.
Asa Germann, best known for playing Sam Riordan in Prime Video’s Gen V and appearing in Scream 7, is reportedly in final talks to play Warren Worthington III, better known to Marvel fans as Angel, in the MCU’s upcoming X-Men movie.
The casting adds another major mutant to a lineup that has quickly begun taking shape following Marvel’s recent announcements surrounding the franchise.
It also gives the MCU another member of the original X-Men team from Marvel Comics.
Asa Germann Is In Final Talks To Play Angel
The Hollywood Reporter first revealed Germann’s involvement, with additional trade reporting confirming that the actor is in final negotiations for the role.
That wording is important.
Marvel Studios has not yet issued its own standalone announcement formally introducing Germann as Angel, so the casting should currently be treated as highly reliable trade reporting rather than a completed Marvel press release.
Assuming the deal closes as expected, Germann will portray Warren Worthington III when Marvel’s mutant team makes its full MCU debut.
And apparently this wasn’t the first X-Man Marvel considered him for.
Germann Originally Auditioned For Cyclops
One of the more interesting details surrounding the casting is that Germann originally tested for Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops.
That role ultimately went to Heartstopper star Kit Connor.
Marvel apparently liked what it saw from Germann enough to keep him in consideration for another major character, eventually landing on Angel.
It’s an interesting pivot because Cyclops and Angel come from the exact same generation of X-Men.
Both were members of Charles Xavier’s original team alongside Jean Grey, Beast and Iceman.
Who Is Angel?
Warren Worthington III first appeared in X-Men #1 in 1963 and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Unlike many mutants whose abilities make ordinary life more difficult, Warren initially comes from extraordinary privilege.
He’s wealthy, handsome and born into the powerful Worthington family, but his life changes when large feathered wings begin growing from his back.
Warren eventually learns to embrace his mutation, using his wings to fly and becoming a costumed hero before Charles Xavier recruits him into the X-Men.
Marvel’s official character history identifies Angel as one of Xavier’s five founding students alongside Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast and Iceman.
Angel Is More Than Just The Guy With Wings
On the surface, Angel’s mutation is fairly straightforward.
He has enormous feathered wings and can fly.
But Warren’s abilities go beyond simply getting airborne.
His body has adapted to survive high-speed flight, giving him enhanced stamina, durability and physical conditioning. Marvel has also depicted him as an experienced hand-to-hand fighter after years spent alongside the X-Men.
More importantly, Warren’s story has always been built around the contrast between appearance and trauma.
Angel looks almost impossibly perfect.
His life eventually becomes anything but.
The MCU Is Getting Closer To The Original Five X-Men
Germann’s reported casting makes Marvel’s current lineup especially interesting.
Kit Connor is playing Cyclops.
Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey.
Now Germann is reportedly joining them as Angel.
That accounts for three of the five mutants who made up the original X-Men team in the comics.
The remaining two are Hank McCoy, better known as Beast, and Bobby Drake, better known as Iceman.
Marvel has not officially announced new MCU actors for either character.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the movie is recreating the original 1963 roster, especially since the confirmed ensemble already includes mutants from several different generations of X-Men history.
But adding Angel certainly makes the possibility more interesting.
The New X-Men Team Already Goes Beyond The Original Five
Marvel isn’t limiting its reboot to the earliest version of the team.
The developing cast also includes Maya Boyd as Ororo Munroe/Storm, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost.
Christopher Abbott is set to play Professor Charles Xavier.
Adam Driver has also joined the film as Nathaniel Milbury, the character connected to Mister Sinister.
That lineup pulls from decades of X-Men history rather than simply recreating one specific comic-book era.
It could allow director Jake Schreier to build a team that feels recognizable to longtime readers without repeating the exact combinations audiences already saw throughout the Fox movies.
Could Angel Eventually Become Archangel?
This is where Warren Worthington’s story gets considerably darker.
Angel eventually undergoes one of the most dramatic transformations in X-Men history.
After suffering devastating injuries to his wings, Warren finds himself vulnerable to manipulation by Apocalypse.
The ancient mutant transforms him into one of his Horsemen, replacing Warren’s natural feathered wings with deadly metallic wings capable of firing razor-sharp projectiles.
Angel becomes Archangel.
The transformation changes his appearance, his abilities and his personality, giving Warren a darker side that has remained part of the character for decades.
It would be an obvious long-term storyline for Germann’s version of the character.
But there’s currently no indication Marvel Studios is planning to bring Apocalypse into this first movie or immediately transform Warren into Archangel.
For now, that remains comic-book history rather than a confirmed MCU plot point.
Marvel Would Be Smart To Let Warren Be Angel First
If Marvel eventually wants Archangel, there’s a strong argument for not rushing there.
One of the problems with previous live-action appearances is that audiences never really spent much time getting to know Warren before the story moved on.
The Archangel transformation matters because something beautiful and heroic is corrupted.
That tragedy works considerably better if audiences have already developed a relationship with Warren as Angel.
Introducing Germann as the optimistic, privileged and somewhat idealistic member of Xavier’s team would give Marvel somewhere meaningful to take him later.
Not every character needs their most famous transformation during their first movie.
Angel Has Appeared In X-Men Movies Before
Germann won’t be the first actor to bring Warren Worthington III to live action.
Ben Foster played Angel in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand.
That version focused heavily on Warren’s strained relationship with his father, who viewed mutation as something requiring a cure.
Ben Hardy later played a different version of the character in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
Hardy’s Warren was introduced as a mutant cage fighter before Apocalypse transformed him into one of his Horsemen.
Neither version received enough screen time to fully explore Warren’s history with the X-Men, leaving Marvel Studios plenty of room to make Germann’s interpretation feel different.
Asa Germann Already Has Superhero Experience
Germann isn’t exactly entering the superhero world for the first time.
He played Sam Riordan across two seasons of Prime Video’s Gen V, the college-set spinoff of The Boys.
Sam possessed enormous superhuman strength but struggled with serious psychological trauma and manipulation throughout the series.
The role required Germann to shift between vulnerability, anger and extreme physical violence, which could prove useful for Warren if Marvel eventually explores the darker Archangel material.
Germann also appeared in 2026’s Scream 7, giving him another major franchise credit before entering the MCU.
Jake Schreier Is Directing Marvel’s X-Men
The new X-Men movie is being directed by Jake Schreier following his work with Marvel Studios on Thunderbolts*.
Lee Sung Jin, creator of Netflix’s Beef, has worked on the screenplay, with Joanna Calo also brought aboard for the latest draft.
The combination suggests Marvel is putting significant emphasis on character relationships alongside the expected superhero spectacle.
That’s particularly important for X-Men.
The franchise has always worked best when the interpersonal drama inside Xavier’s team is every bit as complicated as whichever villain they’re fighting.
The MCU’s X-Men Movie Arrives In 2028
Marvel’s new X-Men is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028.
That gives the studio plenty of time to continue filling out the roster.
Several major characters remain unanswered, including the new versions of Beast and Iceman. Wolverine’s long-term MCU future also remains a much larger question surrounding Marvel’s mutant plans.
More casting announcements therefore seem almost inevitable.
Germann may simply be the latest piece rather than the final one.
Angel Could Tell Us A Lot About Marvel’s X-Men Strategy
The addition of Warren Worthington III is more significant than simply giving the team someone who can fly.
Angel connects Marvel’s reboot directly to the earliest days of X-Men history.
He gives the team another young founding member alongside Cyclops and Jean Grey.
His wealth and social position provide a completely different mutant experience from characters who grew up marginalized or isolated.
And his eventual Archangel transformation provides Marvel with years of potential storyline material if Germann remains part of the franchise.
Most importantly, Warren is a character previous movies never fully explored.
Marvel doesn’t have to compete with an iconic live-action interpretation of Angel in the same way it will with characters such as Wolverine, Professor X or Magneto.
That gives Germann an opportunity to make the role his own.
Marvel’s X-Men Are Quickly Taking Shape
For years, Marvel fans knew the X-Men were coming to the MCU without knowing exactly what that would look like.
That picture is finally getting clearer.
Cyclops. Jean Grey. Storm. Rogue. Emma Frost. Professor Xavier. Mister Sinister.
And now, reportedly, Angel.
If Beast and Iceman eventually join them, Marvel would have every member of the original X-Men lineup available while simultaneously building a much broader mutant ensemble around them.
Whether that means Marvel is deliberately returning to the franchise’s earliest roots or simply selecting the strongest characters for Schreier’s story remains to be seen.
Either way, Asa Germann looks ready to trade the halls of Godolkin University for Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.
Assuming final negotiations are completed, the MCU has found its Angel.
