It has been more than ten years since the release of the groundbreaking sci-fi epic, Avatar. The 2009 offering had been years in the making, with James Cameron having stated that he wanted to get working on it immediately after the release of Titanic in 1997. However, at that point in time the technology needed to make it was not yet available. The same may be the case for Avatar’s sequels, as the series was planned even before the release of the original. However, after an agonizing wait, Avatar 2 is right around the corner. And the good news is that fans won’t have to wait quite as long for the following instalments.

Avatar Still the Most Successful Film Ever

A lot has changed in the film industry in the decade since Avatar was released. In 2009, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was only just getting started, and nobody could have quite anticipated the scale of its success at that point. Now, superhero franchises are some of the industry’s biggest moneymakers, with the MCU bringing in a total of more than $22.56 billion to date. Despite having three offerings in the top ten highest-grossing films of all time, none of the MCU entries have managed to knock Avatar from its top spot.

Avatar has raked in $2.8 billion over its lifetime, with Avengers: Endgame coming a close second at $2.7 billion. This means that Cameron’s offering is still the most successful picture ever made. Even more impressive is the fact that another of Cameron’s pictures, Titanic, is also in the top three with a $2.2 billion lifetime gross. These figures suggest that future Avatar films could be some of the greatest blockbusters ever seen.

Cameron Has Been Quiet But His Films Remain Popular

Cameron may be one of the best-known directors in the business, but he is far from being prolific. Indeed, the 66-year-old has only directed ten films since his debut with Piranha II: The Spawning in 1982. Six of those offerings were nominated for Academy Awards, and five of the six picked up at least one Oscar. That’s why Cameron is regarded as one of the top filmmakers in the world.

The Titanic director hasn’t actually made a film since the release of Avatar in 2009 and instead has busied himself with working on the sequels. Despite being absent from the industry for more than a decade, fans are constantly reminded of his work in numerous ways. Some of his most popular offerings, including Aliens, are available to view on streaming platforms like Netflix.

Other Cameron films can be enjoyed in different ways. For example, the director’s first box office record-breaking film, Titanic, is available as a slot game. This is one of the popular jackpot slots recommended by VegasSlotsOnline, and it sits in the company of other film-branded options like Gladiator. Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day has also been transformed into a slot game, and remains one of the most popular options at online casinos. There are games in other genres based on Cameron’s films as well. For example, there are Aliens games on numerous platforms including Game Boy, mobile, and consoles. There was even a True Lies Sega game that was released alongside the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie in 1994.

Avatar 2 Will Be Second in a Series

When Cameron made Avatar he stated that he has signed a contract to make four more films after the original. Now, it has been confirmed that Avatar 2 will be the second in a series of Pandora-based sci-fi fantasies. Avatar 2 is already in the post-production phase and will be released in December 2022. Avatar 3 started shooting at the same time as its predecessor, and post-production work is already underway on that as well. This will be ramped up after the completion of the second title, and it has a planned released date of 2024.

Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 are now in the pre-production stage and are slated for 2026 and 2028 releases respectively. The great news is that viewers won’t have to wait too long to see most of the plot lines resolved. It has already been confirmed by the creators that each title will have its own self-contained story. Each of the films in the franchise will be connected with an overarching meta-plot, though, which will culminate in the 2028 finale.

Fans have waited a long time for the Avatar sequels, but they are set to be rewarded for their patience over the next ten years. Cameron has a knack for creating some of the highest-grossing films of all time, and it is likely that the next entries to the Avatar franchise will go on to break numerous records as well.
