Professional Wrestling has an interesting connection with sports. The outcome is pre-determined so many people disregard it as a sport completely. However, the physicality needed to participate in the industry is undeniable. Some offshore sportsbooks offer selections. When it comes to the biggest events, you can rely on these offshore sportsbooks to offer up markets on the main events, but how reliable can they be in a scripted world?
The Undertaker Loses at WrestleMania XXX
Even if you’ve never watched the WWE product, you will still know who the Undertaker is given his over-arching fame and tenure in professional wrestling. In 2014 the WWE booked the Undertaker in a match with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XXX. By this point, ‘Taker had won 21 consecutive matches at this showpiece event and hadn’t lost. With Mark Calway (real name) already in his advanced years, some wrestling fans thought this record would retire with the character. Fans were stunned in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans when Lesnar covered Undertaker to end ‘The Streak’ and put the record at 21-1.
Nobody saw that coming. Lesnar was ranked with 1100+ odds, as bookies only predicted the Undertaker extending his undefeated status at WrestleMania. One fan in the UK gambled his entire life savings on the Deadman winning, oops. He lost it all. If he’d have bet on the Beast Incarnate on those offshore casinos he’d be a very rich man now.
Fénix Claims AEW International Championship
Jon Moxley went into the AEW Grand Slam as one of the company’s biggest draws. After all, he signed from WWE (known as Dean Ambrose) having held the world title there and winning it three times in All Elite Wrestling. The former Shield member took on Rey Fénix at Grand Slam 2023 as the International Champion but halfway through the scheduled bout suffered a real concussion, forcing a change of plans mid-match. Fénix stepped in on the fly and celebrated winning the belt, despite having +700 odds before the opening bell. He would however drop the championship 20 days later to Orange Cassidy.
Sheamus Gets Career Revival at 2015 Money in the Bank
The Celtic Warrior, Sheamus had already had a long and successful career with WWE by the time the 2015 Money in the Bank PPV came around. After two prior world championship runs, he was starting to slip down the roster as he aligned with multiple mid-card talents in the League of Nations faction. Yet he emerged as a 1300+ underdog winner on offshore sites in the MITB contract ladder match, as he appeared to be on an upward trajectory once again. He went on to win his title fight against Roman Reigns and is still with the company today, albeit having slipped down the card again.
Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez Upset the MMA Girls
Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez were incredibly over with the fans in the summer of 2023 but that didn’t lead many to think that they could get the best of Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler given that Rousey was incredibly protected since joining the WWE and lost very few matches. The London crowd for Money in the Bank was very surprised yet pleased as the 1100+ underdogs claimed the tag team championship in this bout.
Roman Reigns Defeats Braun Strowman at Fastlane 2017
From 2020 to the present day, Roman Reigns has been untouchable. Nobody has been able to place a hand on him or besmirch his legacy at all. He’s been the undeniable world champion for an eternity and nothing seems to change the company’s plans about that as he continues to hold the belts as the top guy. There was a time however when he was booed out of events and the WWE was trying to push Braun Strowman as the indestructible big guy. Therefore it came as some surprise when
Zack Ryder wins Intercontinental Championship as +3300 Underdog
Whether you know him as Zack Ryder from his WWE tenure or his more contemporary runs under his real name, Matt Cardona with both AEW and Impact Wrestling he holds the distinction as one of professional wrestling’s biggest underdog winners. WrestleMania 32 might not be well-remembered by wrestling fans (often ranked as one of the worst WrestleManias) but Zack Ryder most certainly has fond memories of the night in Texas. He was given +3300 odds of winning the ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship. Given that the bout featured other stars like Kevin Owens (the champ going into the match), Dolph Ziggler, and the Miz it was a surprise to see Ryder pick up the strap on the biggest stage of them all. Vince McMahon may have regretted the decision immediately as the very next night on Monday Night RAW, Ryder lost the championship to the Miz.
