Birds of Prey Has Lowest Opening Box Office For Any DCEU Film

Despite Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) getting rave reviews from critics and fans alike, the truth is “money talks”. Right now, the money is not talking – at least, it’s not saying anything good.

According to Collider, Birds of Prey made $33 million on its opening weekend. This is less than projected. Originally, it was expected to earn $45 million to $50 million on opening weekend. Critics have called it fun and refreshing and we at Geek Vibes Nation can even attest to the movie being good. Directed by Cathy Yan, this movie stars Margot Robbie, Ewan McGregor, Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Chris Messina.

Friday opened at $13 million. This, unfortunately, makes Birds of Prey the worst opening weekend for any DCEU movie. This is a shame, considering how much people have raved about it. Is the movie suffering from some small-minded people disliking that it’s a female-led comic book movie? Or is the R rating hurting its numbers? When Birds of Prey was first announced as rated R it was praised, because it meant nothing was going to be held back. The truth is, though; you want children to see these comic book movies. Parents aren’t taking their kids to see rated R films.

We’re hoping Birds of Prey can pick it back up with word of mouth reviews. If not, Warner Bros may not see the point in investing in more Birds of Prey like movies.
