Hair is important. For creating the look of Black Canary in DC’s Birds of Prey, the right hairstylist was equally important for Jurnee Smollett-Bell.
In a recent interview, this Black Canary actress shares how she specifically requested the right stylist to work on her hair. She worked with producer and actress Margot Robbie on who she wanted to bring in:
“In preproduction when we were creating a look for the hair, for me, it was very important to bring a woman of color on in the hair department to create the look for Black Canary.”
Smollett-Bell requested Nikki Nelms, who has worked on Janelle Monae and Zoe Kravitz. Smollett-Bell added:
“My hair, my texture, the kind of blonde we were going for. [After calling Robbie] I need Nikki Nelms.”
She continued:
“It wasn’t something that they were aware of — the importance of Black women’s hair and having a woman of color do it. But they were open and they were able to listen, and when I explained it to them, they said, ‘Absolutely, we’ll bring her in.’”
