Black Manta’s Role In The DC Universe Goes Beyond ‘Aquaman’ Film

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”1443″ img_size=”800×600″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Comic Con 2018 finally gave us our first look at the upcoming Aquaman film as well as  Yaha Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta and his reveal did not disappoint. His character looks ripped right from the pages of a comic book. In Aquaman, the film will see King Orm aka Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson) as the main villain but that does not mean Black Manta won’t have his time to shine. The folks over at DC have big plans for Black Manta beyond Aquaman and CinemaBlend was able to get some information on that. During set visits they spoke with producer Peter Sarfan who spoke about DC’s plans:

“We certainly have every intention that Manta plays a very large role in the DC universe. He has to. He’s just too great. And we give him his origin story in this movie. We do show how Manta, that we see in the comic books, became that character. And we’re so fortunate to have this guy, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, to play him. I don’t know if you guys saw The Get Down on Netflix, this guy Yahya is just extraordinary, and he came in and he auditioned and we met with him and it was just a slam dunk.”

Peter also spoke to CinemaBlend about what role Black Manta will play in the upcoming film:

“We love Manta. From the early days of developing the screenplay he’s just such a great antagonist and he’s such a fan favorite, and the response every time people hear that he’s in the movie or that it’s confirmed that he’s in the movie they’re thrilled about it. So we always wanted to give him his storyline, and if Orm is the primary antagonist, then Manta is certainly is a very strong secondary antagonist. There is a connection between Orm and Manta that will be revealed that helps make him a more integral part of the story.”

We will just have to wait and see what DC has in store for Black Manta going forward but there were rumors that DC might be setting up the Legion of Doom and that Manta would be a part of that group. We spoke with Mario F. Robles with Revenge of the Fans and he said he was hearing at the time that there would be an end credits scene where Manta and Lex meet to talk about forming the group. Mario has since reported that Hamada might be pumping the brakes on the Legion of Doom thing right now which means there will be other plans for Manta.

We are still over 4 months away from the release of Aquaman so more details will be presented I am sure. What are you thoughts on DC wanting a bigger role for Black Manta? Leave us a comment below.
