‘BLACK WIDOW’ Passes The Torch To Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova

We were supposed to get the Black Widow solo movie back in April, but then COVID-19 had other plans. Now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe film is set to come out in October and I am really hoping that it holds that date (safety first, of course). The Black Widow film will be a prequel where Scarlett Johansson reprises the role of Natasha Romanoff that she’s played since Iron Man 2. Unfortunately, Natasha died in Avengers: Endgame, but that doesn’t mean that was the last we’ll see of her.

Joining Johansson in Black Widow will be Florence Pugh, another Black Widow – Yelena. In a recent interview with Empire, director Cate Shortland teased that this film could be a means of “passing the baton to Yelena”:

“[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction. And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

We haven’t even seen Pugh’s Yelena, except in trailers; but plenty of fans would love to see Yelena take the reigns as Black Widow.

Shortland continued:

“In Endgame, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn’t have wanted a funeral. She’s too private, and anyway, people don’t really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that’s a fitting ending for her.”

As I mentioned before, I adore the character Black Widow and was pretty heartbroken when she died in Endgame. Not only will Black Widow be another opportunity to see this strong female character, but it will be the second female-led MCU film. For a character who has been in the MCU since virtually the beginning. It’s been a long time coming. Pugh looks great as Yelena and I cannot wait to see Rachel Weisz and David Harbour make their Marvel debuts.
