You haven’t seen the true “colors” of vicious gang life in Los Angeles unless you’ve also seen Boulevard Nights. From Executive Producer Tony Bill (The Sting, Taxi Driver) comes this gritty drama that remains as timely and powerful as when it first appeared in 1979. Said Bill: “Everything in this film is authentic. We’ve broken important new ground”. Today, the continuing problem of gang activity re-emphasizes the importance of this trailblazing film. Its insight into gang life remains vital. Boulevard Nights’ gang members are cholos from the city’s Mexican-American barrios, with the film taking a point of view of the gang kids themselves. Two of those kids are the Avila brothers. Raymond Avila (Richard Yniguez) is an ex-gang member trying to build a better life. Kid brother Chuco (Danny De La Paz) is a sullen low-rider, wasting his days with his angel-dusted gang. In spite of their differences, the brothers are bound by strong family ties. But those ties are violently tested when rivals challenge Chuco’s gang….and ignite a full-blown neighborhood war. In 2017 the film was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”

    Video Quality

Boulevard Nights gets a stellar upgrade on Blu-Ray courtesy of Warner Archive with a new 1080p transfer derived from a 4K scan of the Original Camera Negative. This disc spotlights the environments with a degree of clarity and complexity that is not to be undervalued. There are facets of the clothing and production design that are discernable for the first time on home entertainment. The remaster retains the natural film grain with no signs of compression artifacts or other such digital anomalies. There are some warm, earthy colors featured in the environments that ground you in the story quite effectively. Skin tones are natural, consistent, and detailed, and the presentation offers impeccable black levels free from crush. Warner Archive has not skipped a beat with this one.

    Audio Quality

Warner Archive gives this Blu-Ray a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio mix that represents this one as well as you would hope. Dialogue remains stationed in the center channel with environmental sounds deployed properly in the dual mono mix. Some bustling environmental effects add some texture to this story. The score and soundtrack sound rich as it unleashes every element with first-rate fidelity. You could not ask for much more from the audio experience. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided on this disc.

    Final Thoughts

Boulevard Nights is a pretty effective representation of the traditional gang narrative that showcases the perilous nature of this lifestyle without resorting to over-the-top cliches. This is not a feature that relies on big names and Hollywood gloss to sell itself; this film takes a more measured approach that resonates more deeply within the culture. There are elements that have not aged perfectly, but it still packs a punch. Warner Archive has released a Blu-Ray featuring a fantastic A/V presentation but barely anything in the way of special features. If you are a fan of the film, you will not be disappointed. Recommended

Boulevard Nights can be purchased directly through MovieZyng or various other online retailers.
