There were a lot of callbacks to previous films and some long-awaited reunions. There was almost another, though; in this three-hour picture.
Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were at SDCC. They revealed that early plans for the movie entailed Captain American traveling to Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone. It was there that Cap was meant to have a reunion with Red Skull. The villain was the gatekeeper at Vormir in Infinity War and Endgame, but he had gone toe to toe with Cap in Captain America: The First Avenger.
“In the manifesto document, there was one theory that [it was] Cap who goes to space, and he has to collaborate with Red Skull to get the Stone.”
Fans were surprised to see the character in Infinity War, but Markus stated that this had been a plan all along:
“We did send him to space and send him away very much on purpose.”
Considering both Gamora and Black Widow lost their lives for the Soul Stone, it was probably better that Cap never went.
A girl with too many fandoms to count.
