So the Captain Marvel trailer dropped earlier today and honestly, this is the most intriguing Marvel trailer I’ve seen for quite some time. Don’t get me wrong movies like Infinity War obviously get us intrigued and have fans going insane with speculation but Captain Marvel has a certain element we haven’t seen recently in the MCU. Both the very alien aspect of the Kree and Skrulls and the less than familiar time zone of the 90’s. All recent Marvel films have been set in the modern day or up in space so Captain Marvel gets me very excited to see what they can do with the time period and the characters. Anyway, we have quite a bit to get to so let’s not waste any more time and get into this trailer.
(Also, who spotted Carol’s classic comic’s cat in this poster?)
So the trailer opens up with Carol Danvers falling to earth from, presumably an escape pod, and crashing straight into a Blockbuster Video store. It couldn’t scream 90’s any louder. She’s looking confused obviously not knowing where she is, but as the trailer progresses it’s more not “remembering” where she is. More on that in a little bit. Why she ends up crashing to earth, and whereabouts in the film this occurs I’m still not really sure but I’m hoping to see either her and her Kree buddies on a mission or at least some classic space action before she ends up stranded on earth so to speak.
Next up we see Carol looking even more confused than before as she walks through the subway. I honestly found it kind of funny how all these people are ignoring her even though she’s wearing that ridiculous looking sea green space suit. probably yet another crazy on the subway right? Anyway, it was Nick Fury’s narration that really got me here. “War is a universal language” and “I know a renegade soldier when I see one”. Were lines that really stuck with me. Nick at this point is a soldier and honestly not much more. He isn’t the Nick Fury we see in Avengers and he hasn’t had any encounters with any superheroes yet but he is a soldier and he can recognize Carol for being the same. A soldier. I think that connection between the two is going to be really interesting.
Now this next shot at first was a little hard to make out. I originally thought it was Danvers on that table buts its actually a Skrull. The shot is ripped straight out the secret invasion comics and I love it for that but I love Nick here too. Even though it’s presumably dead, due to facing off with Carol or other means, he’s still sat there, gun in hand ready to up arms if he needs to. That could be Coulson in the foreground but I’m not too sure and this could be where his and Fury’s friendship starts but right now I can’t tell. This shot to me is a small glimpse into what Secret Invasion could one day look like in the MCU and that alone gets me very excited but as for right now, anything involving the Skrulls is still pretty exciting stuff.
I really love the ship design in this next shot. It could be Skrull or Kree it’s pretty hard to tell right now but later there is a shot of Ronan on a ship above the earth so my money is on it being a Kree Ship. Coming out of cloak above the earth to me says they’re looking on earth for something, maybe Danvers herself or hiding Skrulls if it is, of course, a Kree ship. The smaller vessel moving towards the ship is giving me major Captain Marvel comic vibes of Alpha Flight. Basically earth’s first line of defense from alien threats right above the earth’s atmosphere. Vey cool stuff and I might be holding my breath for an awesome space dogfight scene like from Guardian Vol. 1 or The Force Awakens but hey a boy can dream right?
We then get more Fury narration as he talks about a “Big car chase” to who is presumably Carol and we see the first tease of her powers as she shoots her power blasts at someone on top of the train or Sub. I’m already hyped to see her powers on screen, especially after the ending of this trailer and this action sequence already looks like a lot of fun. I’m getting a “Winter Soldier chasing Nick” vibe from The Winter Soldier here but that might only be me.
Speaking of Nick we get a great shot of him next, meeting with Captain Marvel and I’ve got to say the de-aging of Samuel looks fantastic. I’d be interested to know how much that cost because he appears to be in a good portion of the film but from what we get here he looks great. Still hoping that we actually get to see him lose his eye. Was that a little too morbid?
Back up to space now, and we get a look at Carols “Home away from home” which I believe to be Hala, the Kree homeworld. This is what I think I’m most excited about from Captain Marvel, another look at the cosmic side of the MCU. I feel like the space side of the MCU is only getting bigger and better after Guardian’s Vol. 2, Ragnarok, and Infinity War and Captain Marvel will hopefully be a nice blend between earth and extraterrestrial action. As for Hala itself, I’m enjoying the look of it right now but I need to see more of it to see how unique its design is.
This shot really interested me because it’s not only a look at Carol pre-Kree powers but also her wing-woman Maria “Photon” Rambeau, who is a single mother to Monica Rambeau who fans of the comic will know eventually becomes her own hero called, you guessed it “Photon”. Such a cool name. Now because Captain Marvel is set in the 90’s Monica will only be a little girl but with more female-led MCU movies promised in the future, we could be getting more Extraterrestrial powered ladies coming to the MCU sooner rather than later. Very excited to see Carol interact with fellow heroes in A4 and future movies.
These next 3 shots were edited together beautifully so I’m going to group them here. Various shots of Carol falling over throughout her life but always getting back up. A very “I can do this all day” kind of feel from this. These captains really have some things in common, don’t they? Anyway, it was pretty cool to see more of Carol’s early years but seen as they’ve already said this is a different kind of origin story so I doubt we’ll see much more than this.
I’m a little unsure about this next shot if I’m honest. Looks most likely like she’s been kidnapped or is being tortured or maybe even experiment on to try and uncover what her powers are. Most likely by Skrulls but as for where in the movie this takes place I couldn’t tell you. Like I said at the start its shots like this that peak my interest and get me thinking about what Captain Marvel can bring to the MCU dinner table.
We then get a couple of shots of Carol leading her Kree Starforce team as well as an up-close shot of Jude Law’s character. This whole team looks very 90’s which is not only very “in fashion” with Captain Marvel but also very cool in its own right. It differentiates itself nicely from the bright outlandish neon of the Guardian’s movies and Ragnarok and again gives us that unique look at the cosmic side of things. All looks very promising.
This right here is my favorite shot in the whole trailer. Not only is it a beautiful shot in of its self but its quite symbolic. Carol looking up at the stars from the cockpit of her plane. A blend of both human and alien sides of the character but also shows her reaching for greatness and maybe never quite reaching it. Really simple but really powerful.
Isn’t that pic the best. 10/10 image right there. Anyway, this shot here links all the way back to that shot of Carol on top of the train because I think its pretty obvious who she was shooting at. This lovely innocent old lady…or rather a shape-shifting earth invading Skrull! At least I hope its a Skrull. This did make me laugh when I first watched the trailer but again anything we have that shows us more Skrulls is enough to get me hyped up!
Seeing Ronan back in the MCU was a lot cooler than I expected it to if I’m honest. He’s clearly got his eyes on earth which I’m sure Carol will have something to say about, and I’m hoping to see what exactly drives Ronan over the edge to work with Thanos in Guardians Vol.1. I want to see his character be fleshed out a little bit more here seen as we all already know his eventual fate.
Now Captain Marvel is good an all, but this is what really broke the internet. Coulson is back baby! Honestly really cool to see him back on the big screen I haven’t kept up to date with agents of shield myself but I’m aware there are some fans who aren’t happy with what the show did to him but I think we can all get excited to see our favorite shield agent back on the big screen. Doesn’t look like as much CG was used on Coulson the way it was on Nick but both look absolutely great.
Easily my second favorite shot of the trailer is up next. The mohawk looks so good and I’m honestly hoping she either keeps it or styles it outside of this water mission she is on with her Starforce team. The mask actually looks great as well and I can imagine it’ll look even cooler when it activates or forms around her head. That bright blue mask looks so cool I hope we see more of it.
This looks to be as close to an origin as we’ll get from Captain Marvel. Similar to the comics there’s an explosion that imbues her with Kree energy and gives her, her powers. I love the color pallet here and the way her body reacts to the power hitting it. I think what I like the most is how it contrasts the last shot and the yellow/orange colors of her powers when she really levels up.
What a shot to end on. Not only the classic red and blue suit but she looks truly powerful, especially compared to her on that train early. This looks like someone who could lead the Avenger’s post A4 and I’m really glad they nailed how powerful she looks. Plus that suit is incredible and even though I don’t mind the sea green look she sports for most the trailer I’ll be happy when its finally replaced with this.
Overall I was really happy with the Captain Marvel trailer. It got me excited about both the alien and the 90’s human sides of the story and surprisingly, rather than get me excited for Avengers 4 (even more than I already am) it got me excited to see Carol Danvers IN Avengers 4 so that must be a good sign for what’s to come.
