If you consider yourself a creative person, you might be pessimistic or cynical about the number of career opportunities available to you. After all, there’s generally more demand for accountants than there is for painters or sculptors. But there are plenty of career opportunities for creative minds if you know where to look.

What are the best opportunities available?

    Marketing

Marketing is a big, open field with tons of roles for you to consider, and nearly all of them require at least some degree of creativity. Marketing is often pushed forward by graphic designers, copywriters, videographers, animators, and other types of creative people who attempt to make organizations look as good as possible to as many people as possible. You won’t always have a ton of creative freedom in your work, especially if you’re focusing on data and objective performance the way a good marketer should, but you’ll have plenty of opportunities to scratch that creative itch.

One of the advantages of pursuing marketing is that you’ll have plenty of job and career options. You can work for all different types of employers, you can focus on visual creativity or verbal creativity, and you can work in isolation or collaborate with a team of people. You can even end up as a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), or a fractional chief marketing officer if you want more flexibility and autonomy in your role.

    Design

There are many roles in the broad umbrella of design that could appeal to you as a creative person. We’ve already mentioned one possibility, graphic design, but it’s certainly not the only possibility. You could become a web designer, a UI designer, or even an interior designer. You could even become a fashion designer if you have the chops for it.

Because there are so many different types of design jobs, it’s hard to illustrate them with a broad brush. But just understand that if you have a high degree of competence in visual arts, there’s probably a job waiting for you here.

    Writing

Similarly, there are many types of jobs that can support you if you’re skilled at writing. You could become a copywriter, an author of novels, or something much different, like a technical writer. If you have some core foundational writing skills, you can make yourself more valuable at practically any job, and if you continue to hone those skills in a particular direction, you can build an entire career out of it.

    Architecture

If you have a good sense for conceptualizing 3D spaces, or if you just like the idea of being part of a construction or engineering effort, you may consider exploring architecture. This field is a bit more niche and specific than some of the others we’ve mentioned, but it appeals to a particular type of person. Through architecture, you can design amazing structures and see them become a reality.

    Art

Obviously, almost any career in the arts is going to scratch your creative itch. The problem is that it’s very hard to build a career in the art world, in part because of high competition and in part because of relatively low demand. However, you can build a career in the art space much more easily if you find a way to differentiate yourself. Skill is obviously important, but you also need to be able to stand out to your target demographics.

    Photography

Photography can be another meaningful career. If you have an appreciation for the photographic arts, there are plenty of opportunities for you to explore that creative pursuit and make some money at the same time.

    Web Development

Although web development does require logic and objective reasoning, it also requires a degree of creativity and flexibility. Even if you’re not directly responsible for web design, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to find creative and novel solutions to client problems.

    Almost Anything

If none of these careers sounds particularly interesting to you, keep in mind that you can exercise your creativity in almost any job, assuming you’re willing to make an effort. There are always opportunities to put your heart into your work and present novel ideas.

    The Side Gig Dynamic

Side gigs and side hustles are increasingly popular in the United States, and for good reason. Even if you’re not able to build an entire full-time career out of your creative passion, you should be able to find a side gig that helps you satisfy your creative desires (while making some money at the same time).

If you consider yourself a creative thinker, and you like the idea of employing your creativity in your work, you’re going to have plenty of options. What’s important is that you choose a career, or at least a side gig, that allows you to accomplish both your personal and professional goals.
