Captain’s Log
Those familiar with Star Trek lore know that the Captain of the Starship Enterprise went through a number of iterations before settling on Captain Kirk. It started as Captain Robert April and then changed to Captain Christopher Pike. It was Pike, as played by Jeffery Hunter, that lead the Starship Enterprise in its original pilot episode, The Cage.
Captains Change
However, once shown to the Executives at NBC, they didn’t like certain aspects of the Pilot. Mainly the Vulcan Science Officer named Spock and the female 1st Officer, called Number 1. They did, however, like the concept. So in an unprecedented move, they asked for second Pilot. This was “Where No Man had Gone Before” and featured a new Captain with William Shatner as James T. Kirk.
However, once the show was accepted by NBC, Star Trek Creator and Producer Gene Roddenberry wanted to make use of the original pilot. Thus The Menagerie was created. This two part episode, made use of the pilot, and was built around Spock’s attempt to aid his former Captain who had been injured in a tragic incident.
Strange New Worlds
Fast forward to the 2nd Season of Star Trek Discovery. In this season, the characters of Captain Pike, Spock, and Number 1 were introduced to a new audience. The reaction of those fans as well as those who remembered the Original series was extremely positive.
Because of this, the powers that be at CBS All Access decided to bring them back for their own show. With that in mind, it was announced in a press release by Julie McNamara, executive vice president and head of programming for CBS All Access. Strange New Worlds would be coming to the Star Trek family.
Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on Star Trek: Discovery last season. This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to Star Trek.
With this new show on the horizon, CBS All Access is becoming the home of original Star Trek programming. First with Star Trek Discovery, then Star Trek Picard, and now Strange New Worlds.
