Character Breakdowns For ‘The Soprano’ Prequel

Ever since the uber popular HBO series the Sopranos ended, fans of the show who were not satisfied by the show’s final episode, hoped for more. When it was announced earlier this year that New Line Cinema had acquired the rights to creator David Chase’s Sopranos prequel film to be titled The Many Saints of Newark, there was hope  on the horizon. This summer when Alan Taylor, who directed several episodes of the show during its six season run, was signed on to helm the project, that hope grew.

The film is said to be set during the riots that took place in the late-60s, which was seen in a flashback during the Season 1, episode Down Neck. Beyond that, details have been sketchy. However, thanks to Hashtag.Com, we now have a breakdown of some of the characters involved.

Young Tony Soprano

This was pretty much a given. Not sure it could even  be called a Sopranos story if Tony weren’t involved. The Many Saints of Newark is said to take place over the course of multiple years and will require multiple actors in the role of Tony to cover that time span. At the start, Tony is a 9-year old boy who is a  die hard Yankees fan. The film will follow Tony to age 16 where he is described as a “budding linebacker” with long hair and bellbottoms. This would mean that if you were to apply Sopranos’ canon, Tony was born on August 24, 1959 which  would put the time frame between 1968 and 1975.

With that setting, it would put Tony’s father, Johnny Boy, and his Uncle Junior in their primes working for Dominic DiMeo. He was the original Boss of the DiMeo Familiy and who Tony was the eventually successor to.  This would also put events near the death of a character that had a major role in the original series. That character would be…

Dickie Moltisanti

Moltisanti was a “foot soldier” for the DiMeo family. On the Sopranos, Dickie was a minor character. His death and subsequent absence however was the impetus that lead Tony to bring in and mentor Dickie’s young son, Christopher. Although Tony called Christopher his nephew, Christopher’s long-standing girlfriend Adriana said that Tony and Christopher had a blood relation. Since Dickie will be a young man here, it makes it very likely that the young Christopher will also be present. As for that “blood relation” between Tony and Christopher…

Aldo Moltisanti

Aldo Moltisanti is an entirely new character and is assumed to be the link to the blood relation of Christopher and Tony. He is described as an “elegant wiseguy” in his mid-60s, who is revealed as Tony’s grandfather! This would be a major bit of news as fans know that Tony’s father, Johnny Boy Soprano, was one of 3 sons born to Corrado and Mariangela Soprano. What is not know is the ancestral connections of Tony’s Mother, Livia. In the film, Aldo is newly married to 24 year old Giuseppina Bruno. That leaves open the question of who Aldo’s previous wife might have been and how she might connect to Tony.
