We can all agree that Thor: The Dark World was not the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best. It wasn’t even its middle. Honestly, if we’re ranking them, it’s down in the bottom along with Avengers: Age of Ultron. Hey, not every film can be a winner. And if we’re talking about the Thor franchise, it’s definitely the worst one. While Thor 1 set everything up and Thor: Ragnarok revolutionized Thor in the MCU, The Dark World was a boring, dull, slow-moving, bad plot-line, horrible dialect, kind of film. Not only has the main villain thought so, but now we have Chris Hemsworth himself weighing in.
Sitting down with GQ, Hemsworth reflected on his thoughts about the first two Thor movies, which took a more Shakespearian approach as opposed to the futuristic, space feel we got in Ragnarok.
“The first one is good, the second one is meh. What masculinity was, the classic archetype — it just all starts to feel very familiar. I was so aware that we were right on the edge.”
I have to say, I agree. The second Thor was not good and not something any of us (most of us) would reach for to lazily watch on a Saturday afternoon. Since the second film, Hemsworth has been able to let his comedic side fly and he’s funny. Really funny. On top of his roles in Vacation and Ghostbusters, his rendition of Thor in Ragnarok completely changed the character for me and that kind of personality change bled into Infinity Wars, where he was able to perfectly balance funny, heartfelt, and strength.
Hemsworth himself even admitted during a Jimmy Kimmel Live show that he had grown bored of playing Thor. This was before Taika Waititi stepped forward and made everything right with the world. Now, Hemswoth is hoping to remain as Thor even after Avengers 4, which would mark the end of his contract with Marvel Studios. I say if the man wants to continue being Thor, let him, because, after Ragnarok and Infinity War, he really is our strongest Avenger.
