Cloud Gaming – The Possible Future of Playstation and Xbox

Since the release of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, there has been a heavy push to a disc-less gaming experience. More than a fair share of popular games are online only; whether it be Fortnite or Destiny 2.  This seems to be imminent since even with a disk, the full game is downloaded to the system with only the disk acting as a key to unlock the content. Besides the downloading waiting period, with a healthy internet connection, it is feasible that there really is no need to spend the extra money on taxes when it can be bought online.

The thoughts of the future come from comicbook.com’s reporter, stating that certain clues could be found in a recent interview with AMD. A few takeaways that they noticed was that in the interview that they had an emphasis on speaking about cloud gaming, even bringing up the subject multiple times throughout. One such quote from Dr. Lisa Su, AMD CEO, when speaking about their partnership with Microsoft, “We’re partnered with them in game consoles. I think we have a vision of where cloud computing is going; we’re working closely with them.” This seems to imply that they are currently pushing in this direction, especially with Microsoft having pushed for online only since the beginning of the Xbox One.

This brings me to believe that with disks becoming obsolete, we may be seeing an ever-rising push for games solely based from the cloud. For those with a fast internet connection, this could be a blessing as this could make the newer systems cheaper than in the past. Though, this may not be friendly to those in rural locations where internet is not as accessible. Whether good or bad, this seems to be the inevitable direction of gaming. There is still a hope that the ones that will be negatively affected by this change will find a work around so that they can continue to game with the community.
