Comic Review: Resurrected #3

Resurrected’s 3rd installment hits hard with the bombshell’s and has some fantastic character development for both older and newer characters. All of that is entwined with even more kickass action that we got hints of in the second issue and ends of a huge cliffhanger which genuinely shocked me and left me on the edge of my seat. Not literally I was laying down reading this comic but you get the idea of just how awesome this issue really was.

Plot

Resurrected is written and created by Christian Carnouche, with artwork and coloring by Crizam Zamora, Salvatore Aiala and, Cardinal Rae, and if for some reason you aren’t caught up on this sci-fi adventure it follows cop partners Cain and Akimi as they unravel the mystery of the resurrected and decided which side they really want to fight for. Speaking about this issue may be difficult without revealing spoilers because there’s a serious amount of character development given here but I’ll try my best. I really liked the journey that Cain went on throughout this issue and how he not only found out more about himself but the others around him. I enoyed the direction Akimi went in ultimately in this issue and I really liked the depth that we got for Pem who I’ve come to love over the last two issues. Overall Issue #3 does feel like a set up for a big finale, moving certain characters into the right positions but that didn’t bother me too much because the characters were really well written here and the action sprinkled throughout was enough to keep it feeling fresh.

Characters

The standouts of this issue are easily Pem, Cain, and Akimi but surprisingly out of the three, Pema and Akimi got more time and I really liked that. This is Cains story and for the last two issues, he’s been the clear star so it was a nice change of pace to have him take a bit of a back seat and let the others take the limelight. I said in my previous reviews I really enoyed Akimi and I wanted to see more of her and this issue did not disappoint. I was unsure when reading what side Akimi would ultimately choose but by the end, it was so badass to see her and Cain back to back. Again if you’re a fan of the cop buddy style Resurrected is rocking I think you’ll particularly enjoy this issue. However, Pem was the character that blew me away this issue. Not only did he get yet another kickass action scene similar to the second issue but his backstory was so unexpectedly tragic. Again no spoilers here, but it really got me feeling for him. It was a nice glimpse into the grittier side of the story that I think Resurrected has and I’ll talk more about that later. Pem’s history on top of the bombshell he drops at the end of the issue makes it an emotional rollercoaster and I honestly didn’t expect such hard-hitting story beats from this comic and it was a seriously cool surprise. Yindi and Cain were by no means weak in this issue bu Pem and Akimi stole the show for me.

Artwork

Issue #3 of Resurrected definitely has a darker tone to it, especially in its artwork. Most noticeably Pem and Yindi. Pem’s backstory is seriously dark and that is reflected well in the darker color pallet of the artwork when he talks about it. Yindi is a hardened warrior at this point and she does not take any crap from anybody. She was a nice opposite to the likes of Akimi and again that presented nicely in the darker tone the artwork took whenever she showed up. The sci-fi element is still present and at one point when Cain and Akimi visit some sort of diner it goes full blown sci-fi with neon bright colors but I appreciate the overall darker and more gritty tone the issue took.

Adapted for the Big Screen

Both this and the previous issue showed fantastic action scenes which I thought would look wonderful on the sliver or even small screen and in my issue #1 review I spoke about how a show like Daredevil could run with a story like this really well. Issue #3 confirmed that theory for me. The dark, violent, and graphic background these characters got and the way it was imagined on the page really made me wonder I great this would look like a series or full-blown film.

Overall I am loving Resurrected right now and the more personal yet darker and more violent tone this issue took when dealing with characters backstories really hit me hard. The newer character like Pem are getting more of the spotlight and that’s nice to see but I was also happy to see characters like Cain not getting neglected either. This issue has really got me hyped for the future of Resurrected and the direction it could take.
