Resurrected is a comic series that really gets the creative juices flowing. Whilst reading through the first issue I was constantly wondering what would actually happen if this was what our world was like and found my self-contemplating matters such as religion, faith, and morality throughout, which I’ll be honest I wasn’t expecting to do at 11 am on a Thursday morning. You take all those interesting ideas and questions and you wrap them up in a sci-fi thriller which still feels grounded in reality and add in a splash of classic “buddy-cop” action and you’ve got yourself a seriously intriguing story.
Plot
Resurrected is written and created by Christian Carnouche, with artwork and coloring by Crizam Zamora, Salvatore Aiala and, Cardinal Rae and follows the story of Cain, a cop of sorts working for the United Nations in the Special Division for the Resurrected and right from there you get your first big mystery. Certain people can come back after death and get a second chance but not everyone. The question is why? The comic is set in the not too distant future and we learn that a company named Dexler Nanotech has helped improve modern medicine tenfold but that still doesn’t explain the mystery behind the resurrected. Why do only certain people get another shot at life? What has Dexler got to do with this? What does this open up for conversations such as religion or faith or God? These are all really intriguing questions that don’t get answered but for a first issue that’s absolutely fine and I’m hoping to simply learn more about this world in future issues. On top of all the heavy topics, there is a gripping murder mystery hidden away in there which feels much more grounded and down to earth which helped balance out the overall feel of the comic. This is futuristic but only by about 20 or so years and so it still feels semi-realistic and the actual sci-fi technology they show here is very clever. Most are built for convenience such as an earpiece that can translate foreign language automatically into your spoken language and this to me is very much where technology today in the real world is heading. Resurrected #1 hits you hard with the questions and the mystery which I found absolutely fascinating and I’m hoping to not only uncover some answers in the following issues but also explore the world they have built up a little more.
Characters
Cain is the main star of the show and he’s definitely likable in his own way. Without giving anything away something hard goes down in his life early on which changes him for sure but even after that I still found his “don’t give a shit” attitude very entertaining and at times even comedic. He says a line early on in the issue which really makes you feel for him and his situation because you know you’d feel the same way if you were him and that gave him a nice vulnerability underneath the hard exterior he puts out for the most part. Cains partner at the UN Akimi was also really cool and felt like a nice match with Cain. Whilst he felt heavy and dark, she felt more light and optimistic and the two blended well together. Their relationship wanst perfect but that’s what made it feel real to me. Those two are honestly the only real characters that get a significant amount of time to shine. We see a small hint at Xanders backstory and a small glimpse into Cains past and the people in it but I certainly want to see more from the other big players in the world as well as Cain and Akimi.
Artwork
I said before that whilst this world is set in the future it still feels very grounded and realistic. The artwork plays a big part in that. Very subtle details such as the whites, blues, and greys of the color pallet to more obvious examples like the tech Akimi uses at the scene of a crime. They aren’t bombastic or over the top but they are certainly a step ahead of what we have today and they really give the whole issue a nice extra flare.
Adapted for the Big Screen
Resurrected has the potential to be an insanely dark and gritty story and I think the Right people could envisage it that away for a film or a series. Don’t get me wrong the comic has its darker moments but when dealing with such massive topics a series as dark and gritty as let’s say Daredevil could really take Resurrected to the next level. All that being said I love the way the world has been realized on the comic page and I want to see more of that world in its comic form for sure.
Overall, Resurrected is a really fun time if you’re a lover of action, sci-fi or a simple buddy-cop story but if your willing to look a little deeper it unfolds into a whole web of seriously hard-hitting questions and subjects which have set up a fantastic mystery to solve. I feel like when you finally peel back a layer there’s another one sat right underneath it and I really dig that style of storytelling so I’m very excited to check out Resurrected #2.
