A character with glowing orange spiral eyes and shaggy hair, featuring a shadowed face with pronounced cheekbones and an intense expression.

DAN DA DAN follows Momo, a high school girl from a family of spirit mediums, and her classmate Okarun, an occult geek. The two of them start talking after Momo rescues Okarun from getting bullied. However, an argument ensues between them – Momo believes in ghosts but denies aliens, and Okarun believes in aliens but denies ghosts. Hoping to change the other’s mind, each of them agree that Momo will go to an abandoned hospital known for its UFO sightings, and Okarun will go to a tunnel that is said to be haunted. In each place, they encounter overwhelming paranormal entities that defy comprehension. In a moment of peril, Momo awakens her hidden power and Okarun gains the power of a curse to challenge the paranormal entities! Could this be the start of a fateful romance as well!? Now begins a new story of occult battles and adolescence!

Based on the popular manga by Yukinobu Tatsu, DAN DA DAN is an electrifying, action-packed love letter to sci-fi and horror with the heart of a ruthlessly funny teen rom-com. The directorial debut from Fuga Yamashiro is the latest series from cutting-edge animation studio Science SARU (Dan Da Dan: Season 1, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) with pulse-pounding original music from kensuke ushio (Chainsaw Man, Dan Da Dan: Season 1).

    Video Quality

Dan Da Dan comes to Blu-Ray from GKIDS with a glorious 1080p transfer in its original aspect ratio featuring all 12 episodes spread across two discs. The animation style is exquisitely stylized with a world of detail and texture. Every episode provides something new in terms of wondrous imagery that makes you grateful that Science SARU got the honor of bringing the material to life. The character designs are impeccably rendered to showcase their unique qualities. This series showcases rich detail in the setting including distinct facets that make the space feel more lived-in. The colors are vivid and brightly saturated with complex hues arousing the senses. Highlights are carefully maintained, and black levels are deep with no semblance of compression artifacts or digital anomalies. The transfer handles every change in the environment with stability including no jagged lines or color bleeding. You could not ask for much better in HD.

    Audio Quality

The Blu-Ray comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 lossless track presented here in its original Japanese, along with an English language dub. The film is presented with optional English, English SDH, French, Portuguese, and Spanish subtitles. One of the standout aspects of the series is the music, and the soundtrack adds such personality to the story as it stirs the audience with its presentation. The environmental detail in the stereo channels is favorable as the sounds ground you into this narrative. The soundscape capitalizes on its frenetic narrative with some vital texture to the world. Dialogue comes through clearly without getting overrun by any competing elements. GKIDS always delivers for fans with a presentation of which to be proud.

    Final Thoughts

Dan Da Dan is a playfully chaotic series that uses a supernatural backdrop to ground us in the lives of these interesting characters. These individuals only deepen our emotional investment as we get to know them more, and the lore of the series only gets more wild and enthralling as you plunge yourself further into things. The animation style is stunning, and there is a degree of creativity on display at all times that allows this to stand apart from other modern series. This one is a complete blast! GKIDS has released a Blu-Ray with a magnificent A/V presentation and a valuable assortment of supplemental features. Recommended

Dan Da Dan: Season 1 will be available to purchase on Blu-Ray on June 10, 2025. A Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray will be available on the same day.
