- Some creators argue that players maintaining Jason and Lucia’s romantic relationship amounts to a form of virtual cheating.
- Several of the videos have accumulated millions of views, although much of the response appears to disagree with the premise.
- There’s also plenty of skepticism over whether the outrage is genuine or simply rage bait designed to generate engagement.
- Rockstar has confirmed that Jason and Lucia’s romantic relationship is optional, even though their partnership remains central to the story.
- The controversy raises a larger question about where people draw the line between role-playing in a video game and behavior they consider inappropriate within a real relationship.
Grand Theft Auto VI isn’t even out yet, and Lucia Caminos is apparently already causing relationship problems.
Following Rockstar Games’ extensive new look at GTA VI, the game’s relationship system between Jason Duval and Lucia has become the center of a bizarre debate spreading across TikTok.
The basic argument goes something like this: if someone is already in a real relationship, should they be allowed to maintain a fictional romantic relationship between Jason and Lucia?
For most longtime video game players, the question probably sounds ridiculous. Romance mechanics have existed in games for decades, and players regularly make decisions for fictional characters that have absolutely nothing to do with what they would do in real life.
But that hasn’t stopped the argument from going viral.
Some TikTok Users Are Calling GTA 6 Romance Cheating

Kotaku highlighted several TikTok videos that began spreading after players learned more about Jason and Lucia’s relationship mechanics.
Some creators have argued that they wouldn’t want their boyfriend, fiancé or husband participating in the game’s romantic activities because doing so requires actively maintaining a relationship with Lucia.
That can involve Jason spending time with her, responding to messages, holding hands and participating in activities together throughout Leonida.
From that perspective, the argument is that the player isn’t simply watching two fictional characters fall in love. They’re actively making choices that help maintain that romance.
Some TikTok posts have therefore described participating in the mechanic as a form of cheating.
And yes, this is apparently a conversation we’re having about Grand Theft Auto.
The Videos Are Getting Millions Of Views
Whether everyone making these arguments actually believes them is another question entirely.
Kotaku notes that some of the videos have accumulated millions of views, with individual posts reportedly reaching upward of five million.
But the comments tell a somewhat different story.
A large percentage of viewers appear to disagree with the idea that controlling Jason while he interacts romantically with Lucia represents anything resembling real-world infidelity.
That has created a second debate surrounding the controversy: is this genuine outrage or simply another example of people discovering an incredibly effective way to generate engagement?
Is The GTA 6 Cheating Controversy Just Rage Bait?
It’s worth approaching the entire situation with some skepticism.
Social media platforms reward posts that generate reactions, and few things generate reactions more efficiently than an opinion almost guaranteed to make thousands of people angry.
Tell the internet that playing GTA VI counts as cheating because Jason can hold Lucia’s hand and you’re probably going to receive a response.
That doesn’t necessarily mean nobody genuinely feels uncomfortable with the mechanic. Every relationship establishes its own boundaries, and people are free to decide what behavior they’re comfortable with from their partners.
But viral popularity doesn’t automatically mean an opinion is widely held.
The overwhelming disagreement appearing beneath many of these videos suggests this may be a relatively small group of people receiving enormous attention because the argument itself is so provocative.
GTA 6 Actually Does Have A Relationship System
The funniest part of the controversy is that there’s at least a small amount of truth underneath the exaggerated argument.
GTA VI really does ask players to participate in Jason and Lucia’s relationship.
Rockstar has confirmed that the two protagonists begin with romantic potential, but players aren’t required to develop that part of their connection.
Instead, the relationship can evolve depending on how players behave.
Spend time together and the romance can grow.
Ignore that side of their relationship and Jason and Lucia can remain primarily partners in crime.
The game doesn’t force players into one particular romantic outcome.
You Can Essentially Create Your Own Dates
Rockstar isn’t using the traditional video game dating system where players simply select “Go On Date” from a menu and watch a scripted scene.
Jason and Lucia can spend time together naturally throughout Leonida.
Players can invite the other character to participate in activities such as kayaking, visiting the zoo or walking along the beach.
Those outings can effectively become dates depending on the state of their relationship.
The pair can also hold hands while walking together, exchange messages and participate in smaller interactions that reinforce their connection.
It’s designed to make the relationship feel like part of the open world rather than a separate minigame.
Yes, You Can Go To A Strip Club Together
Then there’s the part almost guaranteed to create social media discourse.
Rockstar’s extended presentation showed Jason and Lucia visiting a strip club together.
Kotaku previously highlighted the moment while discussing how surprisingly affectionate the pair can be throughout the game.
In other words, the characters themselves appear considerably less concerned about fictional Vice City nightlife than certain people on TikTok are.
That’s probably a sentence nobody expected to write about GTA VI in 2026.
You Don’t Have To Romance Lucia
Anyone genuinely concerned about the mechanic also has a very simple solution.
Don’t use it.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has made clear that the studio doesn’t want to force the romance onto players.
Jason and Lucia remain partners regardless of whether players nurture their romantic relationship.
Their shared criminal journey is fundamental to the campaign. Dating isn’t.
Players who aren’t interested in that side of the game can allow the romantic connection to drift without losing either protagonist or preventing themselves from completing the story.
Jason And Lucia Are Characters, Not Player Avatars
There’s also an important distinction between GTA VI and a game where players create themselves.
Jason isn’t you.
Lucia isn’t your girlfriend.
They’re fictional characters with their own established personalities, histories and relationships.
When someone chooses to strengthen their romance, they’re making a narrative decision for Jason and Lucia in exactly the same way they might decide how Commander Shepard behaves in Mass Effect or which character their protagonist romances in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Controlling a fictional character doesn’t necessarily mean endorsing or personally participating in everything that character does.
If it did, the romantic relationship would probably be fairly low on the list of ethical concerns surrounding the average Grand Theft Auto playthrough.
The GTA Part Makes The Argument Especially Funny
This is, after all, Grand Theft Auto.
Players will steal cars.
They’ll rob businesses.
They’ll shoot people.
They’ll flee from police.
They’ll probably cause millions of dollars in property damage because they missed a turn and decided driving through the building was easier.
Yet somehow the moral line is Jason texting Lucia back.
There’s something inherently funny about a game built around committing crimes inspiring its first major relationship controversy because the protagonists can go kayaking together.
Video Game Romance Is Nothing New
Romance systems have also been a normal part of video games for years.
Mass Effect allows Commander Shepard to develop relationships with several crew members.
Dragon Age has made romance an important component of multiple entries.
Cyberpunk 2077 lets V pursue relationships with characters such as Judy Alvarez and Panam Palmer.
Baldur’s Gate 3 goes considerably further, allowing players to pursue relationships with multiple companions depending on their decisions.
The Sims has effectively allowed players to construct entire fictional romantic lives for more than 25 years.
None of that means someone participating in those stories wants the same relationships in reality.
Role-playing depends on the distinction between player and character.
But Couples Are Allowed To Establish Their Own Boundaries

There is a more interesting conversation hiding beneath all the jokes.
Different relationships have different boundaries.
One person might not care whatsoever about their partner romancing a fictional character. Someone else might feel uncomfortable watching their partner spend hours interacting with an AI companion designed specifically around romantic attachment.
Those aren’t necessarily equivalent situations.
Technology is also making the distinction more complicated. Video game characters follow predetermined systems and dialogue, while modern AI companions can provide personalized, persistent interactions that increasingly resemble actual conversations.
Where someone draws that line is ultimately something couples have to determine themselves.
The mistake is assuming one person’s boundary automatically becomes a universal definition of cheating.
GTA 6 Is Going To Generate A Lot More Debates Like This
The TikTok controversy may ultimately be more interesting for what it tells us about the cultural footprint Grand Theft Auto VI is about to have.
The game hasn’t launched yet.
People haven’t completed the story.
They haven’t spent dozens of hours with Jason and Lucia.
And we’re already debating whether maintaining their fictional relationship violates the boundaries of a real one.
Imagine what happens once hundreds of millions of hours of gameplay begin hitting TikTok, YouTube, Twitch, Reddit and every other social platform.
Every controversial mission will become a conversation.
Every hidden mechanic will become a viral clip.
Every Jason and Lucia interaction will be dissected.
And every bizarre opinion imaginable will eventually find an audience.
Lucia Is Already Causing Chaos Before GTA 6 Launches
There’s also something appropriately Grand Theft Auto about the whole thing.
Lucia doesn’t need to steal a car, rob a bank or reach a six-star Wanted level to cause chaos.
Apparently all she needs to do is hold Jason’s hand.
The more reasonable takeaway is that Rockstar is attempting something unusually ambitious with its protagonists. Instead of making Jason and Lucia’s romance completely predetermined, the studio is giving players some influence over how that relationship develops without turning either character into a blank avatar.
Whether players keep them together, allow the romance to fade or largely ignore the system will be up to them.
Whether someone’s real-life partner considers that cheating?
Rockstar probably can’t help you with that one.
