[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]DC has officially revealed 4 brand spanking new variant cover arts for the launch of Heroes in Crisis, coming September 26th. Artists J.G. Jones, Mark Brooks are Joining Tom King and Clay Mann on the Heroes in Crisis team and the 3 cover arts below are their incredible work. They will also be working on chase variants for issue #1.
They feature the infamous Harley Quinn as well as DC’s own Holy Trinity, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman himself. I really dig these cover arts for so many reasons. They capture that gritty and dark edge that DC Comics has always had especially with the Harley Quinn covers and I think they look great. Artist Ryan Sook is responsible for the 4th variant cover (shown below) and will be providing themed open-to-order variant covers for all seven issues of the series.
I love the idea of Sook’s covers being an incident or file reports. They look like they’ve been ripped straight out of Arkham, Blackgate or some other mental asylum from one of Gotham’s dark corners and I really love the feel they give the issues. They also carry on that darker tone I mentioned before which seems to be very fitting for the issue’s content and is certainly working well here. When discussing his cover art Sook went onto say: “I think these momentous occasions fit so naturally into the scope of the project as a whole. Many devoted readers know these events, but even new readers can instantly connect to them or may be aware of them already. Like the death of Superman or Batman’s back being broken—these defining moments have already come out in other media like film, animation, and games, because they are lasting, character-defining moments. They go beyond the comic book page into something human that we can all relate to. It’s what makes the series so compelling, to see how the heroes have to deal with [trauma],”
Something else I love about these cover arts is the smaller details scattered throughout, for example, the numbers on the Superman andBatmann files are definitely deliberate. Sook explained: ” “They deal with the date of the stories’ original release but without a year ascribed. That is deliberate. I researched the exact dates, but the trauma can’t be locked in to history when you carry it with you; it becomes kind of timeless.”
“Covers should be instantly impactful and visceral in communicating an idea or concept. That’s not more, or less, pressure but it is different [from interiors] because your focus changes. I still want to tell a story with that one image but don’t want to lose sight of the visual impact it should have. I’m gathering many elements of a larger story and arranging them on a single canvas in a way that hopefully accomplishes that.”
So other than The Death of Superman what else can we expect from the following issues of Heroes in Crisis? Well, we’ll get Bane Breaking Batmans back for issue 2, the death of Maxwell Lord at the hands of Wonder Woman for issue 3, Aquaman losing his mind for issue 4, the death of Jason Todd for issue five, and Hal Jordan killing Kilowog for the sixth and final issue. These sound really interesting and I think Batmans back being broken and Jason Todd’s death sounds the coolest to me.
