[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”11046″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]In a move towards diversity and exclusivity, DC And Warner Bros. are officially developing their first Latino superhero revolving around Jaime Reyes who is also known as Blue Beetle. This superhero movie will have its screenplay written by Mexican-born Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who is responsible for Universal’s Scarface. He also is involved for the Miss Bala remake for Sony.
Blue Beetle, in the comics; tells the tale of a Mexican-America, Reyes; who is the third character to don the Blue Beetle Mantle. He was created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner. Reyes made his first appearance in 2006’s Infinite Crisis #5. In the comics, he discovers the Blue Beetle scarab while on the way home from school with two of his best friends. He then takes the scarab home, when it comes alive, and grafts itself onto the base of Reyes’ spine, which gives him a suit of extraterrestrial armor. With this armor, he can create weapons, wings, and shields.
This is a huge step for comic book movies. While we have Jay Hernandez as El Diablo and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, this is the first leading Latino character. This is a great move by the studio, as it’s already been proven that diversity does well in superhero movies and let’s be real, this is 2018, it’s time for a leading Latino superhero.
