Director Patty Jenkins Assures That ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Is Not A Sequel

When Warner Bros. And DC Films presents Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 1984 in June of 2020, it will do so with the realization that it is not a sequel. This is according to Wonder Woman 1984 producer Charles Roven — the veteran producer behind Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and others. In fact, Jenkins herself is trying to stay clear of considering her latest work a sequel. She believes it can stand on its own as Roven explains in a recent interview with Vulture.

She was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel… It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana/Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years. But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling…. it’ll have a lot of the same emotional things, a lot of humor, a lot of brave action. Tugs at the heart strings as well.

In the grande scheme of things, the idea that this is or isn’t a “sequel” seems like semantics at this point. If it looks like duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it probably…won’t be important if it does as well as the first film.
