If there was ever a film that capture the imaginations of children and adults alike, it was Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride. Based on the book by William Goldman, it told the tale inside a tale of a young man (Fred Savage) who is home sick and is read a book by his Grandfather (Peter Falk). This book is The Princess Bride. While initially fearing that the book is nothing but a “kissing” book, the Grandson soon learns it is full of sword fights, near escapes, six-fingered men, Shrieking Eels, Rodents of Unusual Size, revenge, Giants, and yes…true love (or to Blave…which means to bet!) at least if you were to ask Miracle Max (Billy Crystal). If ever there was a story crying to be made into a musical, it is The Princess Bride. Disney has been working on developing the film into a musical since back in 2013, but now they’ve announced a full creative team in the hope to finally turn the project into a reality.
Disney Theatrical has revealed that composer and lyricist David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit) and writers Bob Martin (The Prom) and Rick Elice (The Cher Show) will be orchestrating the adaptation, which will be based on both the original William Goldman novel and the 1987 Rob Reiner film. Thomas Schumacher, president and producer of Disney Theatrical Productions talked about the project:
The Princess Bride has proven to be an enduring delight and a beloved favorite to multiple generations. What William Goldman created is first and foremost a celebration of storytelling; what better place to spin that tale than on the stage? I am thrilled that the next chapter in the life of The Princess Bride will unfold on the stage. With [Walt Disney Studios chairman] Alan Horn, Thomas Schumacher and his team at Disney Theatrical Productions leading the way, Buttercup, Wesley and all of Florin are in the best of hands.
While other details are not known at this time, I can just imagine certain songs for certain characters. Wesley would be singing a whistful ballad called “As You Wish.” Vizzini would roll with a comedic turn singing “Inconceivable.” Count Rugen would thrill audiences with his rendition of “Pain Sucks.” Miracle Max would tell his tale of Royal Servitude and dismissal with “Humperdink you Stink!” Indigo would belt out his signature song, “Hello, My Name is Indigo.”” The possibilities are endless. By the way, David Yazbek, I am available for consultation.
