A person holds a bloodied, glowing rock in their hand, with red light emanating from the cracks in the object.

Stranger Things may have wrapped its epic Hawkins saga, but the Duffer Brothers are already diving into a bold new live-action spin-off – and it’s nothing like what fans might expect.

In post-finale interviews, Matt and Ross Duffer revealed the upcoming series will feature a completely fresh start: no returning characters, no Hawkins, Indiana, a different decade entirely, and zero direct involvement with the Upside Down.

A Clean Slate with One Key Connection: The Mysterious Rock

The one major tie-back? That enigmatic glowing rock from the Season 5 finale.

In “The Rightside Up,” young Henry Creel (Vecna) discovers a briefcase in a cave containing a mysterious, rune-marked stone that fuses with him – granting his powers and linking him to greater forces.

The Duffers confirmed this “loose thread” is deliberate setup: “There’s lingering questions about the rock and where it came from… That will be answered,” Matt told Variety. But don’t expect a deep Mind Flayer dive – it’s “an entirely new mythology.”

“It’s very exciting to work with a clean slate: completely new characters, new town, new world, new mythology.” – Matt Duffer

What We Know About the Spin-Off So Far

    • No familiar faces: Entirely new cast and characters.
    • New setting: Different town and decade (likely exploring pre-1980s origins).
    • No Upside Down focus: Moves beyond Hawkins’ iconic alternate dimension.
    • Development update: The brothers returned to the writers’ room on January 5, 2026.

Ross emphasized: “This is the end of the story for these characters of Hawkins, for the Upside Down.” The spin-off connects loosely but stands alone with its own sci-fi/horror adventures.

    Separate From the Animated Spin-Off

Stranger Things: Tales From '85 Voice Cast & First Look Photos Set At Netflix

Note: This live-action project is distinct from the upcoming animated series Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, set between Seasons 2 and 3 with the original kids facing new threats – arriving on Netflix in 2026.

The Duffer Brothers are thrilled for this “fresh” chapter, promising answers to finale mysteries without sequel-izing the core story.

Fans: Are you excited for a total Stranger Things reboot-style expansion, or missing Hawkins already?
