A person in Roman soldier attire kneels on the ground, holding sand in one hand while the other hand rests on the ground. A sword is stuck in the sand nearby.

The debut trailer for Gladiator 2 has quickly become a viral sensation, racking up over 11 million views in under 24 hours. However, the trailer’s soundtrack choice has sparked considerable controversy among fans. The use of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” over scenes of Paul Mescal’s gladiatorial combat has been met with disapproval, with many arguing that the modern hip-hop track clashes with the historical setting of the film.

The dissatisfaction among fans led to the creation of an alternative version of the trailer. YouTuber TheCaptainofGondor took it upon themselves to edit the trailer, substituting the controversial music with a score they felt was more appropriate. Their version, titled “Gladiator II | Official Trailer (2024 Movie) 4k – BUT BETTER”, features Hans Zimmer’s “Now We Are Free” from the original Gladiator soundtrack.

Released just six hours after the official trailer, this fan-made version has been lauded by viewers for its fitting and nostalgic choice of music. The re-edited trailer is slightly shorter but maintains the epic tone that fans expect from the Gladiator series.

Responses to TheCaptainofGondor’s edit have been overwhelmingly positive. Many fans have praised the YouTuber for capturing the essence of the original film’s atmosphere. One commenter noted, “This is what the trailer should have been from the start. The music perfectly matches the epic feel of Gladiator.” Another added, “The fan-made trailer gives me chills. It’s so much more in line with what I hoped for.”

“This is a vast improvement. I swear, it’s almost like they either didn’t want to use Hans Zimmer’s score in the actual trailer on purpose, or just didn’t want to pay him the royalties.”

This reaction underscores the strong connection fans have with the original film’s score, which was instrumental in defining its epic and emotional depth. The backlash against the official trailer’s music choice and the subsequent popularity of the fan-made version highlight the importance of music in maintaining the tone and legacy of a beloved franchise.

As excitement for Gladiator 2 continues to build, fans are hopeful that the filmmakers will consider their feedback. While the official trailer has sparked debate, the fan-made version has shown that there is a clear desire for the sequel to honor the musical legacy of the original film.
