For better or worse, we’re getting another Grudge movie, with the first look and details officially released today.
Starring Andrea Riseborough, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Jacki Weaver, Lin Shaye, and Demian Bichir, The Grudge will focus on the same premise of an angry spirit that curses a house and dooms all who enter to a violent death.
This time, however, the film will take in America rather than Japan and exist at the same time as the 2004 version. “This movie takes place at the exact same time that the Sarah Michelle Gellar Grudge takes place,” director and co-writer Nicolas Pesce told Bloody Disgusting. “So Sarah Michelle Gellar is doing her thing in Japan, and this is what’s happening in America at the same time.”
Pesce also stated that even though the new film has the same title, “it’s not a sequel, it’s not a remake.”

The Grudge is scheduled to hit theaters on January 3rd, 2020.
