First Trailer for Netflix’s Ratched Makes The Show Look Like Another Version of ‘American Horror Story’

Netflix released its first official trailer for the Sarah Paulson-led series Ratched. For those who are unaware, Paulson plays Nurse Ratched. Who was the despicable and horrific character in the Jack Nicholson-led film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Nurse Ratched really was the definition of a real b*tch and there’s probably no one better in modern times to play a younger version than Paulson.

This is a show I am excited for, but the trailer does have me a little skeptical now. First, let me start that aesthetically, I love the look of the 1950s world. Visually, it’s a nice era to look at and seemingly perfect for horror-related content. I also enjoyed the use of the song ‘Big Spender’ in the trailer.

Now, my issue is that the show comes from those behind American Horror Story. That combined with the show including Paulson and Finn Wittrock is fiving me American Horror Story vibes. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was more of a psychological case study combined with a criticism of how the mentally ill were treated back in the day. As well as what constituted as “mentally ill”, which was an incredibly loose term. Ratched was a horrible woman, so I understand just wanting to show the true extent of her villainy. But, I don’t want it to be an AHS carbon copy. Take a look at the trailer and you tell me:

Either way, I am still excited for Ratched. It has a great cast. Joining Paulson and Wittrock are Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Corey Stoll, and Vincent D’Onofrio. Ratched hits Netflix on September 18th.
