As we move into episode six of this season, we’re moving closer to a very tense collaboration with the USSR. The biggest theme of this episode was integrating the U.S.A. team with the USSR – is it going to work? Or was this one of the worst ideas NASA could put together?
Slight Spoilers
Let me start by saying what my favorite part of this episode was. It was Danielle’s scenes with the Cosmonauts – specifically with Nikola Djuricko’s Stefan. Danielle is an eternal optimist, which is precisely what is needed during such a tense time. While the Cosmonauts are presented as very serious and cynical, Danielle’s happy optimism is what saves both awkward and morbid situations from getting out of hand. The scene with Danielle and Stefan talking about Laika (the first dog in space) stood out to me.
Kelly’s Story
Another scene that stuck out to me was the explanation of how Ed and Karen came to adopt Kelly. We can see, in this episode; Kelly is wondering about her origins and it’s clear that this was not something explained prior to her. It sets up for what we know will probably happen later in the series. What comes as a result is unknown. But, it not only opened the window for her story, but also gave us insight into Ed and Karen’s relationship post-Shane dying.
In fact, episode six laid down a lot for future payoffs. We have Gordo making bold claims to Tracy’s new husband. And Ellen’s decision to stop living life in hiding. It was arguably the most emotional part of the episode and felt the saddest, yet joyous moment in Best-Laid Plans. Where any of these stories go, I don’t know, but I’m always here for the ride.
Rating: 4/5
This episode might have not gone anywhere [really], but it set up for the future. Every season needs an episode like this and unlike most shows, I actually enjoyed just watching the story unfold. It didn’t feel like too abrupt of a page-turner and it explained things that we needed explaining. As always, every character does a great job and you feel transported into their world. I would love to see who is inspired by this show go into the space program, as it certainly displays the world in a hopeful and adventurous light.
The episode did end ominously and I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more tense and dangerous scenes from here on out.
