From director Christopher Guest comes another brilliant “mockumentary” following in the tradition of his ensemble efforts “Best in Show”, “A Mighty Wind” and “Waiting For Guffman”. The sardonic genius Ricky Gervais joins Guest’s cast of regulars including Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, Eugene Levy, Michael McKean for this skewering of Hollywood awards season with its hype and hoopla.

Video Quality

For Your Consideration gets a long-desired upgrade on Blu-Ray courtesy of Warner Archive with a new 1080p master from an unspecified source. From what we can tell, this was captured on 16mm and finished to a 2K Digital Intermediate, so we would guess that some light remastering work has been performed on the DI. The results are strong overall with certain facets of the costumes and production design rendering more crisply and textured than ever. The transfer retains the natural film grain free of any compression artifacts or other such digital nuisances. The film’s colors stand out with the vibrant awards season world faithfully saturated along with some of the design elements Black levels are respectably deep in shadowy corners, and highlights never fall to blooming. Skin tones appear to be consistent, natural, and detailed across the ensemble. Warner Archive has provided a nice transfer for this overlooked comedy.

Audio Quality

Warner Archive brings this new Blu-Ray to audiences with a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix that offers an ideal representation of the sonic journey. The hilarious dialogue comes through crisp and clear in terms of accuracy to the source even with some overlapping voices. Nothing ever gets trounced by the music in the film or other bustling environmental flourishes. The understated score complements the film throughout with perfect fidelity. The environmental effects allow the narrative to feel more genuine and lived-in. The surround track is not too showy, but it fleshes things out quite effectively. This track is a great audio experience thanks to the efforts of Warner Archive. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided.

Special Features

Audio Commentary: Co-writers Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy provide an archival commentary track in which they lightheartedly discuss the development and production of the film including adding scenes to flesh out certain characters, determining which actors to put in certain roles, the look of the characters, and more that is a fun listen.

Over 30 Minutes of Hilarious Bonus Material: A 39-minute of unused material is provided here. These moments may have not made it into the movie, but there are some hilarious bits in here.

Final Thoughts

For Your Consideration is yet another hilarious mockumentary from Christopher Guest and his extremely talented and ever-expanding bench of talented performers who bring this distinct style of humor to life with the best of them. This particular outing is not the strongest from this troupe, but when you are judging it against some of the funniest comedies of their respective decades, you cannot deem that a major knock against the film. There are so many moments that will have you laughing out loud, and the Oscar-season fanatics amongst us will appreciate it on an even deeper level. Warner Archive has released a Blu-Ray featuring a lovely A/V presentation and some welcome special features. If you love the other films from this group, you will have a good time here. Recommended
