Whether or not this was a good thing will be debated at least until the new prequel premiers. As far as actor Issac Hempstead Wright who portrayed Bran is concerned, the selection of his character as King was a real victory and made sense under scrutiny. Of course, when he learned of David Benioff and Dan Weiss’ intention of making him king, he thought it was a joke. He said as much in a recent interview with HBO:
I had to physically get up and walk around my flat. I said, “What?! You’re joking.” It was the very last thing I expected to happen. I was convinced they had sent a script to everyone in which they become king or queen, so I still didn’t believe it until the read-through.
After some reflection however, he could see the thought process in making Bran King.
I think he is a great character to take on that role. You never thought of him in that way, but what more could you ask for in a king than to have no personal attachments, no agenda, but have a calm understanding of the entire universe? He’s the ideal person to be in charge.
It probably helped that it was George R.R. Martin himself who had informed Benioff and Weiss of his prospects for Bran. One was the whole Hodor revelation and other was he would be King. In this case, Martin won out as both of his story elements were used. One might question however, whether Bran is being completely forthright when he said he had no “agenda.” If Bran knows what will happen, and takes steps to make sure it happens, that sounds like an “agenda.” Perhaps that word does not mean what I think it means. (Stealing a quote from Indigo Montoya). Regardless, Bran is King and that’s OK with Issac Hempstead Wright. How about you? Are you alright with Bran “The Broken” as King? share your thoughts with us at GVNation.
