It’s hard to remember that Arya Stark’s star Maisie Williams was a very young girl when the show first started out. The characters of Game of Thrones may have grown up around violence, drinking, and plenty of sex, but the actors behind the scenes were young children just like you and I once were. At the age of 14, Williams was around plenty of NC-17 raciness that she described as being quite awkward to be around.
“The sex was just quite embarrassing and awkward for us,” Williams says about her and Sophie Turner, who was only fifteen at the beginning of the series.
In season one there is a very graphic sex scene between two women in a brothel, where the character Littlefinger is training them for their career as escorts for the kingdom. Although you the viewer may be an adult who has seen it all before, it is eye-opening to remember that not everyone on set was of age to be watching such scenes.
Apparently, now though; Williams is comfortable with watching any Game of Thrones scene with her grandma, just with the aid of a little liquid courage.
“Bless her,” Williams said. “My mum just plies her with more and more gin.”
