    ‘Game of Thrones’ Wins Big at 2018 Emmys

    A year after sitting out of the Emmys, everyone knew winter was indeed back on Monday night at the award show. Game of Thrones returned to the awards show with a whooping 22 nominations, the most of any show, including all 3 Lannister siblings being nominated (Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). However, this year Thrones had some tougher competition. With titles like The Americans, The Handmaid’s Tale, and This is Us going against Thrones, the drama category was rather packed. Now, while the show won 7 Emmys during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier last week, Thrones did take home 2, and easily the biggest award, of the night.

    Peter Dinklage won Thrones’ first award last night for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work in The Dragon and the Wolf, the season 7 finale. It was Dinklage’s 3 Emmy while being on the show, having won in 2011 for Baelor and 2015 for Hardhome. Dinklage beat out his own screen brother, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for the award, who was nominated for his role as Jaime Lannister in The Spoils of War, it was also Coster-Waldau’s first Emmy nomination for the show. The other notable nomination was Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister for her role in The Dragon and the Wolf. Headey, who has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series four times, surprisingly lost to Thandie Newton of Westworld.

    However, the biggest question of the night was always going to be who would win the award for Outstanding Drama Series. A year after The Handmaid’s Tale nearly swept the drama category, it would be forced to go one on one with the hit show that is Game of Thrones. Also up for the award was The Americans, The Crown, Stranger Things, This is Us, and Westworld. However, mostly everyone thought it would come down to Thrones and The Handmaid’s Tale. As Keenan Thompson opened the envelope, I genuinely was worried that Thrones wouldn’t be able to pull this one off; however, I was wrong to ever doubt the show. Game of Thrones pulled off the win, winning the Outstanding Drama Series award for a 3rd time.
