Goodbye, Marvel TV: An Underappreciated World

With the official cancelation of Helstrom, Marvel TV has come to an end. Now, there’s been some bad times – Inhumans, the recent allegations against Jeph Loeb, Iron Fist. But, Marvel TV also gave us some of the best Marvel moments on TV. Daredevil, The Punisher, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and more! Prior to a few years ago, we were all living happily with the variety of Marvel shows – shows that could exist outside of the film universe. As well as shows that could be grittier than what the Marvel Cinematic Universe releases in theaters.

Unanswered Questions

Let me say that I do love what the MCU is doing. And I’m super excited for the upcoming Disney+ shows. I just wish there was a way for those and for the Marvel TV shows to exist. Now, people may say that all of this was a plan for Disney to get these characters back. Obviously, the idea of certain characters interacting with the movie Marvel characters is awesome to me. But, the idea that so many of these characters will be recast and that we will never see continuations of storylines bums me out.

I talked slight smack about Iron Fist before, but the second season was a vast improvement on the first. And the second season, as well as the second season of Luke Cage; ended with massive cliffhangers. Cliffhangers that I doubt will be explored in the MCU. Recasting The Punisher? I can’t stand the thought – Jon Bernthal is too perfect and I just feel like his performance as Frank Castle was cut short.

Hulu Could Have Been the Dark Marvel Hub

I think we all knew Helstrom would get canceled. Not because it was bad – I really liked the Hulu series. I had hoped it would have continued, so it could show that Hulu would be the hub for the grittier Marvel properties. I mean, Disney owns Hulu – why not use it? People will say because Helstrom was still a revenant of the Jeph Loeb era and Kevin Feige wanted everything under him. Fair enough – it’s just disappointing that Helstrom set up such a fantastic storyline for a season two that we’ll never get.

It’s been two years now since all of the Netflix Marvel shows have been canceled. As well as the Runaways, the Gifted, Cloak and Dagger, and more. We’ve had time to mourn these shows and face reality, but I do wish things could have gone differently. I do hope we get to see these characters back, along with their respective actors. With the rumor that Charlie Cox is reprising his role as Daredevil in Spider-Man 3 comes the slight hope we can see others from Marvel TV. But, the Cox rumor is just a rumor. So, who knows? But, Marvel TV was a wild ride and gave way to some of the best performances, most iconic hallway fight scenes, and characters who will never feel right unless they’re played by the actor that played them.
