Greatest Crime Shows Ever

In the different genres of storytelling and TV shows, crime usually gets the most number of viewers. The idea of breaking rules, trying to get away with it and finally getting caught is a very ancient form of storytelling that never fails to create fascination. These days there are many crime shows that have narratives that can be incredibly twisted.

Shows like Making of a Murderer on Netflix have brought more attention to this genre and there is now an incredible explosion of similar programs across TV and streaming channels. Netflix is just one of the many streaming channels and you can check out many more such services here.  There are now shows about bad cops, lawyers, celebrities and even schoolkids committing crimes. This obsession with the genre can be understood by the human fascination with the dark side and the idea of punishment and serving justice. Here are a few of the greatest crime shows that are available on various streaming sites.

Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders is a British series about a family of gangsters called Peaky Blinders. The story is set in the post-WW1 era in Birmingham. It’s a classic story of police vs criminals but done with style. The series won the 2013 BAFTA Best Drama Series.

Narcos

Narcos is a superb crime biography show that depicts the story of Pablo Escobar – the world renowned drug lord from Colombia. The story follows American DEA agents trying to track down Escobar back in the 1980s and has the incredibly stunning town of Medellin as the backdrop. Pablo Escobar was so famous that even after his death his life has made a lot of money according to this article here. Narcos is one of the most popular shows on Netflix till date.

Fargo

Fargo the TV show is an adaptation of the Coen Brothers movie with the same name. It follows many crimes across midwest America. The writing and the narration almost makes it seem that these are all real stories. The show has featured big names like Billy Bob Thornton and Ean McGregor and has won many awards at the Emmys and the Golden Globes.

The Wire

The Wire is probably one of the greatest crime series ever. The writer David Simon used to be a journalist and used the notes he took from all his years covering Baltimore’s crime scene. The series talks about how the police, street thugs and the politicians are all part of a system that’s crumbling and corrupt to the core. Even though the series never found much acclaim when it was initially released, it stands as one of the greatest ever.

Breaking Bad

If you haven’t watched Breaking Bad, you have probably still heard of it. A high school chemistry teacher going through a midlife crisis and a cancer diagnosis become a crystal meth manufacturer. As the series proceeds, we see him become a sort of mafia lord and he starts to enjoy his new found infamy. Each episode ends with a cliffhanger making this an absolute delight to watch.

Some more shows that are worth checking out include The Sopranos, Sherlock, Twin Peaks and True Detective. You might end up binge watching most of these so beware!
