In the mid-1980s, editor Larry Hama assembled some of Marvel’s top artists and writers for a 13-month project that produced gritty, intense, and darkly humorous adventure stories. These tales explored various themes, including gangster noir, historical battlefields, the perilous Old West, and post-apocalyptic futures, all featured in “Savage Tales.” This oversized anthology series stood out from anything else at the time, giving legends like John Severin, John Buscema, Herb Trimpe, and many more the chance to work on exciting, unique projects alongside a new generation of talent. Now, Marvel and Fantagraphics are reviving their acclaimed Lost Marvels line with Lost Marvels No. 3: Savage Tales of the 1980s,” collecting all 8 issues of the magazine’s run, back in print for the first time since 1986.
“Lost Marvels No. 3: Savage Tales of the 1980s,” showcases some of the most striking work from artists like John Severin, John Buscema, Sam Glanzman, Val Mayerik, Ron Wagner, Gray Morrow, Wayne Vansant, Herb Trimpe, Michael Golden, Joe Jusko, Mary Wilshire, Arthur Suydam, Will Jungkuntz, Vincent Waller, and Ken Steacy. Alongside writers such as Chuck Dixon, Bill Wray, Don Kraar, Robert Kanigher, Denny O’Neil, Doug Murray, and Archie Goodwin. This collection features stories that have been unseen for nearly four decades. Featured stories include Severin and Dixon’s “By Rail to Vladivostock,” Murray and Golden’s “The Nam, 1967,” Glanzman’s “Of War and Peace: The Trinity,” Jungkuntz’s Blood & Gutz series, and Trimpe’s Skywarriors series, all topped off with a heartfelt remembrance by Larry Hama.
